All the information you accept shapes your way of thinking. Therefore, long-term acceptance of fragmented information narrows your thinking and makes complex reasoning difficult. Fragmented information typically has these characteristics: ? They are often collections of facts rather than logic. ? They often greatly simplify the reasoning process. ? They often reduce multiple paths to a single path. ? They are often not rigorous or comprehensive. In short, to make learning easy, fragmented information significantly lowers cognitive costs, most notably by simplifying complex matters. They often tell you only the surface, but not the underlying principles or the connections to other things. What we call "knowledge" consists of two parts: "facts" (or "ideas") and "connections." Facts are points, and connections are the lines that link them. The network formed by these points and lines is our knowledge structure. "Facts" determine the breadth of your knowledge, and "connections" determine its depth. If you understand the connections between things, even if you only know A, B, and C, you can deduce D, E, or even F based on their internal logic. This process is called thinking. But if you don't understand their internal logic, even if you know A, B, C, D, and E, you cannot deduce F—you don't know to put them together, nor what internal logical relationships they might reveal. This is the disadvantage of fragmented information. When we accept fragmented information, we are actually expanding "facts" but not increasing "connections." Over time, this turns our knowledge structure into a scatter plot: isolated knowledge points float in various positions, lacking a network to connect them in an orderly way. The results are:
- Fragmented knowledge continuously stimulates your brain with fresh content, keeping you in the joy of "Ah! I've learned something new," making it hard to stop. This is why we find it hard to resist scrolling through Weibo or Moments—because we can immerse ourselves in the stimulation of "gaining new things" with minimal effort.
- However, because this information lacks connections to other information, it is difficult to "retrieve." The less retrieved content is pushed to the bottom of memory by more frequently retrieved content—so this fragmented information is extremely easy to forget. You think you've gained a lot, but in reality, you've gained nothing.
- As mentioned earlier, our knowledge network determines how we think. Therefore, long-term acceptance of fragmented information does not improve your thinking ability—your "network" does not expand; it is even harmful. You become accustomed to viewing problems through isolated knowledge points, used to one- or two-level thinking, and unable to analyze things at five, six, or deeper levels. Over time, you weaken your ability to think about complex matters. Note: Fragmented information is not necessarily related to its source. If you are used to accepting simple ideas like "A is B," "C is bad," or "Because A, therefore B," then whether you are scrolling through Weibo, reading books, or watching open courses, you are accepting fragmented knowledge. I once mentioned in a question about "What is the thinking style of smart people?" that the thinking style of smart people is actually simple: metacognition. Faced with the same problem, smarter people will think about its background, causes, rationality, necessity, and possibilities. They elevate their perspective, making it easier to find a thread connecting it to some distant "idea," thereby expanding their thinking network. So, if you have this awareness, whether you scroll through Weibo or read books, you can avoid fragmented cognition. The specific methods are:
- Spend some time building your knowledge system. Sort out what you already know. How? Use the standard of being able to state the influencing factors of a knowledge point and its effects on other things. Go through such knowledge points, and this network is the knowledge network you have already built.
- Find the contact points of your knowledge network—that is, knowledge points you are interested in but have not yet explored. When reading or learning, consciously engage with these contact points to extend your knowledge network.
- When encountering a new knowledge point, first consider how to incorporate it into your knowledge system. That is, recall your knowledge network in your mind and think about how it can connect to what you already know.
- If you find a corresponding point, clarify the path. That is, investigate and clarify the path between this new knowledge point and a known point, connect them, making this knowledge point a new "contact point" that expands your thinking network.
- Test and output. Explain the connection between these two points clearly. The simplest way is to teach others through speaking or writing. Or, explain it in your mind to see if you can make it clear and understandable without obstacles. Only what you can output truly belongs to you.
- Decisively discard content that does not fit the above methods. If something cannot be incorporated into your cognitive system, it means you cannot master it yet, so give it up decisively because it has no value to you, or the cost (of memory) far outweighs the benefits. - When reading, don't pursue "finishing a book," but rather "what you gained from it." A book's content cannot be 100% useful to you; there will be things you're not interested in or cannot accept. That's fine—accept what you can. You don't need to read it all. Even reading half, putting it down, and skipping to other books is a good approach. Reading should serve you, not the other way around.
- How to handle those interesting fragmented knowledge pieces on Weibo or Zhihu? My personal suggestion is to treat them as starting points. If you find a piece of knowledge interesting, use it as a starting point to explore its underlying principles, background, and applications. Search for information, Google it, and follow the trail. The knowledge point itself has little value; the valuable part is your exploration process. What you discover through exploration can be incorporated into your knowledge system and become part of your thinking.
- All the above requires considerable time, but learning is inherently difficult, so excellent people are always rare.
