Source | Beverage Marketing ID | V-VIEWS Looking back at 2024, China's functional beverage market released considerable momentum, with many brands choosing to enter this track to expand their product matrices. Well-known beverage brands such as Want Want and Genki Forest have all made moves. By 2025, functional beverages continue to demonstrate strong potential. As the weather warms up recently, the beverage market has gradually entered the annual arms race, and the freezer, as a battleground, has already shown the trends for this beverage peak season. Beverage Marketing observed that in the Nongfu Spring self-service vending freezer downstairs from the office, two products sell best: one is Oriental Leaf's sugar-free tea, and the other is its "Scream" (Jianjiao). Specifically, Scream sells even better, with only two bottles left in its slot... A small glimpse reveals the popularity of functional beverages. According to Innova Market Insights data, as early as 2023, the global energy drink market had already reached $55.5 billion, and this figure continues to grow. In China's functional beverage market, which has matured over years of accumulation, 2025 also brings some new changes... The Permeation Revolution of Electrolyte Water In 2022, Alien's electrolyte water achieved a sales miracle of 1.27 billion bottles, opening the door for electrolyte water. Data from Mashangying shows that from 2022 to 2024, the electrolyte water market maintained rapid growth. Market research indicates that consumer awareness of electrolyte water surged from 38% in 2022 to 72% in 2024. When the distribution rate of electrolyte water rose to 98%, this subcategory began to show explosive growth. Since the start of 2025, multiple beverage brands have announced new electrolyte products. Yinlu launched an isotonic electrolyte drink called "Duo Bu Shui" (More Hydration); Jinmailang, following its Dian Ping Heng and Tian Bao products, launched a new 1L "Kuai Bu Shui" (Quick Hydration) electrolyte water; Uni-President revamped its existing product "Hai Zhi Yan" (Sea Whisper) with upgrades in formula and packaging, receiving positive market feedback; and China Resources C'estbon's classic product "Moli" (Magic) also received a refresh, adding functional ingredients such as electrolytes and amino acids, with electrolytes as a prominent selling point for distribution... And Dongpeng's "Bu Shui La" (Hydrate), which fully popularized electrolyte water, is naturally thriving. Over the past year, "Bu Shui La" became a new growth engine for Dongpeng Beverage. According to Dongpeng Beverage's financial report, this product generated revenue of up to 1.495 billion yuan in the last fiscal year, a year-on-year surge of 280%, entering the "billion-yuan single product" tier. Nielsen data shows that during the reporting period, Dongpeng Bu Shui La's sales share reached 6.7%, up 5 percentage points from the same period last year, and its sales value share reached 5.5%, up 4.1 percentage points year-on-year, ranking among the top in the market. In essence, the explosive growth of electrolyte water is a fundamental disruption of traditional hydration methods by consumer demand. In today's era and living environment, amid the contradiction of the 996 work system and the fitness craze, people need solutions that simultaneously satisfy physiological needs and psychological comfort. Thus, the "water substitute" function of electrolyte water has become increasingly important. Electrolyte supplementation is breaking out of professional sports scenarios and evolving into the "liquid armor" of urban life. It must be said that this permeating electrolyte revolution is reshaping the capillaries of beverage distribution channels. Vitamin Matrix Begins Precision Strikes As health needs deepen in the Chinese market, consumer health demands are becoming more refined. Of course, this trend is also transmitting to the production side. Recently, Li Zi Yuan, a dairy brand known for its sweet milk, suddenly crossed over to launch a vitamin water called "VitaYoung Vitality Vitamins," which attracted widespread attention in the industry. It is reported that this product emphasizes health, simplicity, and purity as its differentiated advantages, aiming to create a professional and pure vitamin water for consumers. This is not the first functional beverage product on the market to feature a single vitamin as its selling point. At the recent Genki Forest Creator Camp event, its sub-brand Alien launched a new product called "Alien Vitamin B Water," sparking considerable discussion. This is also the first vitamin beverage in the industry to feature Vitamin B as its selling point. It is reported that Vitamin B not only protects the liver and boosts metabolism but also helps consumers regulate their emotions, even alleviating anxiety and reducing depression. From this perspective, Vitamin B indeed has space worth exploring. In fact, over the past period, nutrient beverages in China have already developed to some extent. For example, Nongfu Spring's Vitamin Water series adds different types of nutrients as selling points, and many functional beverages also include compound vitamins. However, supplementation of single vitamins is still in its infancy. Now, the launch of such products in the domestic beverage market also signifies that vitamin beverages are beginning to iterate. When traditional compound vitamin beverages face sluggish growth, breaking through with single categories becomes the key to breaking the deadlock. Besides Genki Forest and Li Zi Yuan, many other brands have also started fine-grained segmentation of vitamin beverages this year. Currently, Beverage Marketing has observed that Haowangshui recently launched a Vitamin E lemon water, made with low-temperature cold-grinding technology, 0 sugar, 0 additives, with Vitamin E as the main selling point. Earlier, Want Want launched an electrolyte drink called "Huidong," which, although not containing a single nutrient, features Vitamin B6 as a major selling point. Nestlé also recently launched another electrolyte drink overseas called Unwell Hydration, which also contains Vitamin B. In addition, many overseas brands are also making moves on this front. Behind this increasingly refined segmentation is consumers' ultimate pursuit of "precision nutrition." In today's life scenarios, we can clearly feel that consumers' demand for functionality is gradually increasing. Women hope to improve their skin, office workers want to quickly relieve fatigue during busy work, or protect their livers while socializing. These increasingly segmented consumption scenarios are constantly driving their demand for functionality. Coincidentally, beverages are one of the important carriers of functionality. In this context, functional beverages seem to be gradually becoming a substitute for health supplements. The Ascending War of Functional Beverages On the front line, we see a variety of functional beverages being chosen, while at the forefront of the industry, we see functional experiments that are ongoing or about to be conducted. Compared to other traditional nutritional supplements, many new raw materials are also worth attention, such as collagen peptides for beauty functions, lutein and anthocyanins for eye health, DHA and phosphatidylserine for brain health, and curcumin, inulin, and many other niche functional nutrients waiting to be explored by the market. Different nutrients are suitable for different functions, and combining multiple elements for innovation can present more diverse products. However, it is worth noting that these niche nutrients also bear the responsibility of educating the market, and how to present them reasonably while conforming to consumer demand is a question that brands need to seriously consider in the future. Looking back at the beverage market in 2025, the functional beverage market continues to rise. Behind its recognition and selection is a shift in consumer cognition. Nielsen data shows that 68% of consumers are willing to pay a premium for beverages with clearly labeled functions. This data also indicates that competition in 2025 will enter the stage of "functional evidence." In this stage, we may see more clinical trial data, patent technology certificates, or certifications from authoritative institutions. These credentials, once exclusive to the pharmaceutical field, are also becoming new bargaining chips for brand products on beverage shelves.
