On June 1, Children's Day, Coca-Cola launched its first alcoholic beverage in the Chinese market—Topo Chico hard seltzer. According to a Coca-Cola spokesperson, the launch of Topo Chico in China is a breakthrough attempt in the country's alcoholic beverage market and complements the company's "Total Beverage" strategy. What are the characteristics of this alcoholic drink called Topo Chico? And is Coca-Cola's move solely to advance its "Total Beverage" strategy? -01- Coca-Cola's First Foray into Alcohol As Coca-Cola's first alcoholic beverage, let's first see what this product actually is. The "sparkling water + alcohol" Topo Chico hard seltzer, introduced to the Chinese market, is an innovative product that Coca-Cola launched only last year. Before entering China, Topo Chico hard seltzer was first rolled out in Latin America and Europe. Topo Chico hard seltzer is made with gluten-free alcohol as a base, mixed with sparkling soda water. It features low alcohol content (4.7% vol), low sugar, zero fat, and fruity flavors. Topo Chico hard seltzer comes in five flavors globally. Currently, three flavors are available in the Chinese market: Lemon Lime, Strawberry Guava, and Tropical Pineapple. They were officially launched on June 1 on Coca-Cola's Tmall flagship store and will gradually be available on more e-commerce and new retail channels. As expected, it still emphasizes concepts like low alcohol and low sugar, with flavors leaning toward easily accepted fruit tastes. It is reported that after its launch in Latin America and Europe, this product received widespread praise from professional bartenders and has high acceptance among Chinese consumers. More flavors will be introduced in the future. On the Tmall product page, the consumption scenarios highlighted for these new products include relaxing after work, gatherings at home, outdoor activities, and picnics. In terms of sales channels, Coca-Cola China told Shidai that it will focus on e-commerce platforms where young people gather. "Topo Chico's target consumers are young people aged 20-35 who pursue novelty and are willing to try different experiences," the company said. As Coca-Cola's first alcoholic beverage launched in China, what does this move signify? -02- Entering the Alcoholic Beverage Market: Is the 'Happy Water' No Longer Appealing? Although Coca-Cola emphasizes that this new product is an important achievement in advancing its "Total Beverage" strategy, the real reasons are likely more than that. 1. Intense Competition Under a Trend As a sub-category of low-alcohol drinks, hard seltzer is still in its infancy in China, with huge potential for market expansion. As an entry-level alcoholic beverage, its attributes such as low sugar, zero fat, and low alcohol content align with modern young people's pursuit of a low-burden lifestyle. According to the "2020 Low-Alcohol Beverage Industry Market Prospects and Current Situation Analysis" released by the China Research Institute, the market size of the domestic fruit wine industry was approximately 231.5 billion yuan in 2019. In the past two years, the consumption amount in China's low-alcohol beverage market has grown by more than 50% annually. During last year's 6.18 shopping festival, the growth rate of low-alcohol beverages exceeded 80%. From multiple platforms' analysis of current alcohol consumer preferences, low-alcohol drinks have become the choice of more young people. However, regarding beer, the king of low-alcohol drinks, young domestic consumers have a clear attitude: beer has low alcohol content and is cheap, and the slight buzz it provides can quickly relax people, making it the most convenient way to "decompress." But beer has issues like high calories, bloating, headaches after drinking, and high purine content, which make young people hesitate. Therefore, products like Topo Chico hard seltzer are gradually becoming a new trend. Although consumers don't overly consider health when drinking, they do consider how to mitigate harm. 2. Global Pressure Makes the Chinese Market Crucial The product was first tested in European and American markets, and only after it matured did it enter the Chinese market. This shows Coca-Cola's high regard for the Chinese market, which is easy to understand. Coca-Cola's Q4 and full-year 2020 financial report shows that its full-year 2020 revenue was $33 billion, a year-on-year decline of 11%. In the Asia-Pacific market, Coca-Cola saw growth in soda category sales in China and India. The Asia-Pacific market's value share in the non-alcoholic ready-to-drink beverage market remained flat compared to 2019, while China's market value share in both dine-in and takeout channels grew in Q4 and the full year of 2020. Given such performance, the Chinese market has become a top priority, and Coca-Cola needs to find new growth points to boost its performance. -03- Can Topo Chico Achieve Quick Success? Ideals are beautiful, but reality is often harsh. Although this new Coca-Cola product has been accepted by many consumers in European and American markets, few such products can quickly dominate in China; many have quietly exited. Overall, in my view, it is not easy for Coca-Cola to establish a foothold in China's alcoholic beverage market with a new product. First, low-alcohol beverages and sparkling water have a high overlap in consumer demographics and consumption scenarios. Against this backdrop, achieving a 1+1>2 effect is a huge challenge. Moreover, under this trend, although the category is growing rapidly, the number of players entering the market is countless. Not to mention the competition among domestic beer and beverage giants, there are also many emerging brands with impressive performance, some even outperforming the "giants" in certain sub-categories. New consumer brands like Zouqi Qingniang and Berry Sweet are examples, frequently securing huge financing. Looking at their product performance alone, without the backing and resources of giants, "Topo Chico" might not be a match in the domestic market. Although this type of product has broad prospects in the Chinese market, many companies have already launched hard seltzers. Facing homogeneous competition, Coca-Cola still needs to meet many challenges.
