Blue Moon ranked first in both laundry detergent and hand wash in the 2024 China Brand Power Index. The company had held the brand-power lead for fourteen consecutive years. Separate market statistics cited in the article also placed it first in laundry-liquid share for fifteen years and hand-wash share for twelve.

Rankings can be debated by methodology, but sustained leadership raises a useful strategic question: what operating foundation allows a consumer brand to remain distinctive after a category matures?

Blue Moon's answer combines product technology with what it calls knowledge marketing.

Product Innovation Changed the Category

Blue Moon helped accelerate China's shift from laundry powder toward liquid detergent in 2008. It launched a hand-wash-specific laundry product in 2011, a concentrated detergent with a dosing pump in 2015, and a biotechnology-based concentrated product in 2018.

The sequence included both vertical and horizontal innovation.

Vertical innovation improved the core format: powder to liquid, ordinary liquid to concentrate, and concentrate to more specialized formulations.

Horizontal innovation addressed narrower jobs, including odor and germ control, sportswear, hand washing, and fabric care.

This matters because category leaders often defend share by copying visible trends. Blue Moon tried to use technical research and emerging user problems to create the next category standard before demand became obvious.

Consumer Education Makes Technical Value Usable

A technically better product does not create value if consumers do not understand the difference or use it correctly.

Blue Moon invested repeatedly in cleaning education. Campaigns explained stain science, washing principles, product selection, and correct dosage. The company used media, platforms, experts, creators, and public events to make cleaning knowledge accessible.

This approach differs from advertising that simply repeats leadership, sales, or corporate scale. It attempts to establish an expert role by helping consumers solve a practical problem.

Knowledge marketing is therefore a brand-positioning strategy and a usage strategy at the same time. Better understanding can improve product results, reduce disappointment, and justify a more advanced formulation.

Consistency Creates Trust

Blue Moon applied the same cleaning-expert identity across long-running consumer events, university art partnerships, major sporting-event service, and digital science communication.

The activities differed in audience and format, but the underlying subject remained cleaning and care.

Long-term consistency allows separate campaigns to accumulate rather than disappear. Consumers encounter the same expertise through product design, instructions, content, and service.

Product Creates Value; Brand Makes the Value Recognizable

Blue Moon's operating logic can be summarized in two layers.

Product innovation creates a better cleaning solution. Brand and marketing make consumers understand, remember, and trust that solution.

Marketing without product becomes a temporary claim. Product without communication remains invisible. Sustained category leadership requires both—and requires each new message to remain consistent with the brand's underlying capability.

The market environment changes, but this foundation is durable: solve a real problem, explain the solution clearly, and continue doing so long enough to earn an expert position.
