Supermarkets Face Their Darkest Hour: Is Community Group Buying the Culprit?

Fresh produce has long been seen by physical retailers as the main category for attracting customers and as a moat against online competition. Many retail companies believed that as long as they held this ground, the outcome was still uncertain. However, the sudden COVID-19 pandemic last year changed people's lifestyles, accelerated retail transformation, and made many giants eye the vegetable-selling business, leading to the rapid spread of community group buying. Industry survey data shows that in the first quarter of this year, supermarket hypermarket foot traffic dropped significantly, with declines generally in the double digits, some even reaching 20%-30%, and sales also declined to varying degrees, with fresh produce hit hardest.

This results in non-well-known brands and their distributors being pushed out of channels in the digital era, forming a digital barrier that is higher than traditional channel barriers.

Why Yonghui Superstores Can't Become China's Walmart

Many hope China can have its own Walmart, especially shareholders of Yonghui Superstores. However, due to factors like population density, complex retail environment, high land costs, and brand building time, it's difficult for China to produce a super retail brand, and Yonghui is unlikely to become a small Walmart.
