Chayan Yuese Ventures into Hard Discount Supermarkets: Easy to Chase Trends, Hard to Succeed!

On August 31, Chayan Yuese announced via its official Weibo that it had opened a new discount store named "Hard Discount Bulk GO" in Changsha. The store, located at 360 Huangxing South Road, Tianxin District, features a two-story design and offers over 200 selected products, including tea, candies, biscuits, stationery, and cups, which are not available in its standard stores, mostly private label or self-distributed items. It also includes a "water bar" area for a fresh tea experience. For years, Chayan Yuese has adhered to a direct-operated model, and in 2018 received angel investment from Tiantu Capital, followed by investments from Shunwei Capital, Source Code Capital, and Yuansheng Capital. In 2023, it achieved a net profit of approximately 500 million yuan. Despite its strong core business, the company is venturing into an unfamiliar field, raising questions about whether this move is driven by short-term trends or long-term strategy.

Breakthrough Points for FMCG Manufacturers in the Foodservice Channel: Large Outlets Benchmark Against Hypermarkets, Small Outlets Align with Distribution

Recently, several leading beverage and beer brands discussed with me how to excel in the foodservice channel. Previously, their channel coverage was primarily direct-operated, but with shrinking consumer demand and rising labor costs, they now plan to explore a development model leveraging specialty channel distributors. Indeed, channel competitiveness stands out in the alcoholic beverage market as one of the three core competencies (brand product competitiveness, channel competitiveness, and consumer competitiveness). For example, in beer, years of monopolistic practices (buying outlets for exclusivity) have deprived many local brands of survival opportunities. However, a key point here is that while the cost of buying outlets is co-invested by manufacturers and distributors, the negotiation and communication with outlets are almost led or independently completed by distributors, highlighting the channel value of distributors.

In county-level markets, a fierce battle among snack stores is underway. It's not uncommon to see three or four snack stores clustered on an 800-meter street. Two Directions in FMCG Market Evolution: Left to Pang Donglai, Right to Hard Discount

The main contradiction in the FMCG market is the relationship between supply and demand, which determines the market theme and the effectiveness of competitive strategies. In a period of undersupply, the theme is expanding capacity; in oversupply, it is reducing costs. Cost reduction enables price cuts, which stimulate consumption, while inefficient players are eliminated, restoring balance. From the supply side, FMCG capacity consists of production and distribution capabilities. The current market is in an early stage of oversupply, with excess capacity, insufficient quality and efficiency, and unmet demand in high-end and lower-tier markets. Effective strategies include the Pang Donglai model (higher quality with controlled premiums) and the hard discount model (lower costs, especially distribution, to serve price-sensitive customers). The hard discount model is simpler and more suitable for most Chinese retailers, offering faster growth.
