How should the relationship between manufacturers and distributors be defined? Opinions vary. Some say it's a fish-and-water relationship, with the manufacturer as the fish and the distributor as the water; others say it's a partnership, a coexistence based on shared interests; still others describe it as a romantic relationship, ambiguous yet occasionally friction-filled. In any case, no matter how we define it, the bond between the two is always complex and tangled. Here, I will analyze how to maintain the delicate relationship between manufacturers and distributors from the perspective of fundamental needs.

I believe that the manufacturer (husband) and the distributor (wife) are in a marital relationship: equal, mutually loving, mutually beneficial, with aligned goals. There may be occasional friction, but these are mostly secondary contradictions. As long as the primary contradiction is resolved, there is no major issue. Below, I will interpret the manufacturer-distributor relationship from the perspective of a husband-wife relationship.

1. Why do we get married and become husband and wife? Meeting each other's needs is the prerequisite and foundation for marriage.

Manufacturer's needs: The husband (manufacturer) hopes the wife (distributor) will: a. Pay before delivery (cash before goods) b. Grant exclusive distribution, hoping the distributor will specialize in the product c. Achieve greater market share through low profit and high sales volume d. Absolutely cooperate with the manufacturer's promotional activities e. Promote the full product range

Distributor's needs: The wife (distributor) hopes the husband (manufacturer) will: a. Deliver goods before payment, offering credit and initial stocking b. Grant exclusive distribution rights, but the distributor will not exclusively distribute the product c. Pursue only higher distribution profits, with little or no concern for market share d. Often attempt to embezzle promotional profits and withhold market expenses e. Only sell products that are profitable and certain to sell

2. What kind of wife (distributor) does the husband (manufacturer) want?

  1. The husband wants a truly distributing customer as his wife, not just a middleman who profits from price differences! Definition of a distributor: "Jing" means operation, "Xiao" means marketing, "Shang" means merchant. Being a distributor requires complex thinking, management skills, knowledge, and wisdom. Definition of a middleman (daoye): Buying low and selling high; selling when someone buys, waiting when no one buys. Being a middleman is simply speculative behavior.

  2. The husband (manufacturer) wants a wife (distributor) with a terminal-based network! Network is not equal to territory; network is not equal to region. Definition of network: How many retail outlets do you have? How many second-tier wholesalers are downstream? How many distributors? How many supermarkets? How many C and D stores? a. Improved distribution coverage and visibility can guide consumption, enhance brand image, and increase product turnover, allowing wholesalers to sell goods faster. b. With more sensitive market information and more shelf space and capital at terminal outlets, you can effectively curb competition. c. More bargaining chips with manufacturers allow you to secure better survival space (monopoly distribution rights). d. Increase competitive advantage and dominate among wholesalers.

Many people have sufficient funds, but few have market networks, and even fewer have good market networks.

  1. The husband (manufacturer) wants a wife (distributor) with good customer relationships! a. Establish a basic service mindset. b. Value relationships with every downstream customer (the better your service, the more they buy from you). c. Value relationships with upstream manufacturer representatives (the smoother and happier you make their work, the more support you'll receive). d. Strengthen communication and exchange. e. Remember: Integrity is always the first priority.

Good social and terminal customer relationships are productivity!

3. What kind of husband (manufacturer) does the wife (distributor) want? a. Corporate credibility: As the saying goes, "Without trust, a person cannot stand." A company's credibility is the prerequisite for good manufacturer-distributor cooperation and the core concern for distributors. Otherwise, the distributor's interests cannot be guaranteed. So the wife wants to marry a husband with high market credibility.

b. Brand-building and market promotion capability: In an era of relative overcapacity, products are increasingly homogeneous, so consumers' brand awareness is growing. Distributors hope manufacturers have strong financial strength for brand building and promotion. For example, a manufacturer's powerful air and ground media saturation bombing is a distributor's favorite. So the wife wants a husband who is bold, courageous, and determined—a "tall, rich, and handsome" man.

c. Support in information systems, management training, and other cooperation: Distributors hope to get, at zero cost, the manufacturer's strong information platform to help build their own marketing database to monitor managed personnel and terminal service stores, such as the manufacturer's terminal mobile system. They also hope for zero-cost comprehensive management, systematic sales, after-sales service, and professional skills training. They hope for zero-cost assistance from manufacturer personnel to achieve channel refinement and assist in market operations. So the wife wants a husband who can help her for free and whom she can rely on for life.

d. Product differentiation: Differentiation is a unique selling proposition, the core selling point of a product, and the core competitiveness of a company. So the wife wants a husband who is unique.

e. After-sales service: This is the distributor's most concerning issue. After accepting products, is there after-sales support? How are near-expiry or slow-moving products handled? Who bears the handling costs? So the wife wants a husband with no worries.

4. Three Magic Weapons for a Marital Relationship 1. Mutual giving: Husband and wife should give to each other. The husband (manufacturer) and wife (distributor) are equal in contribution. If one only gives and the other only takes, the marriage cannot last. Our couple also gives mutually. The husband (manufacturer) can give the wife (distributor): products, personnel, expenses, profits, brand, etc. The wife (distributor) can give the husband (manufacturer): capital, warehousing, vehicles, network, connections, etc.

2. Mutual understanding: Husband and wife must understand, tolerate, and help each other. Only then can the marriage last long. Otherwise, it leads to divorce. a. Understanding is mutual: Don't only see your own perspective; think from the other's viewpoint. Practice empathy to achieve mutual understanding. b. Understanding requires communication: Be able to comprehend each other, connect on a spiritual level, and finally truly understand. c. Understanding requires mutual acceptance: Recognition → Liking → Pursuit → Acceptance → Love → Marriage. Mutual acceptance is true understanding!

3. Mutual responsibility: Husband and wife must share responsibilities. Only by sharing responsibilities can the couple stay together through thick and thin. a. Financial responsibility. b. Product item responsibility. c. Regional responsibility. d. Market problem responsibility. e. Interest responsibility.

In conclusion: Any market is a plate of tens of millions or hundreds of millions of yuan. There are many manufacturers' products and many distributors operating in the market. Choosing each other in the vast market is not easy. Fate brings us together, and we must share the storms and honor. When manufacturers and distributors become husband and wife, they should treat each other sincerely, consider each other, communicate and understand more, and reduce suspicion and complaint. Their interests are their children. Only when the children grow healthily will the marital relationship become stronger. Finally, I wish all manufacturers and distributors eternal unity and a long life together.
