In recent years, the bottled tea market has seen a constant stream of new products. Lemon tea, as a fundamental flavor in the tea beverage category, has transitioned from being solely dominated by Vita Lemon Tea to seeing major manufacturers like Master Kong, Dongpeng, Coca-Cola, and COFCO successively enter the market with their own products. As a niche segment, what is the future development trend of the lemon tea market, and which brands will have an impact on Vita Lemon Tea? -01- The tea beverage market is clearly upgrading, and the era of "tea+" has arrived Over the past 30 years, the domestic bottled tea market has undergone multiple rounds of iteration. With consumption upgrading, the structure of the tea beverage market has undergone significant changes. According to Euromonitor data, the overall tea beverage market in China began to decline in prosperity around 2013-2014. From 2014 to 2017, sales volume continued to decline, but sales value remained basically flat. The tea beverage market shifted from focusing on quantity to quality, and the category entered a phase of transformation and upgrading. Retail sales value and volume of China's tea beverage market Tea beverages are gradually entering an era of health upgrade. On the one hand, the upgrade is driven by overall consumption upgrading, shifting from the pursuit of "good taste," "thirst quenching," and "sweetness" to "natural," "healthy," and "functional" attributes; on the other hand, products like iced black tea and green tea have been bestsellers for years, but profit margins in the intermediate links are too low, and the industry urgently needs products with higher profit margins to fill the gap. It is no secret that distributors in recent years have been earning profits measured in "cents" per box for green tea and black tea. According to Nielsen data, in 2018, the retail sales of China's ready-to-drink tea market exceeded 26 billion yuan (excluding milk tea and herbal tea), showing a rapid recovery. The price band has shifted from 2-3 yuan to around 5 yuan. The market is presenting a richer state, with the most significant growth in the "tea+" and sugar-free tea segments. After years of market cultivation, sugar-free tea beverages saw their growth inflection point in 2018. Sugar-free tea beverages pursue the authentic taste of tea, and the representative brand Nongfu Spring, through years of cultivation, has become the leading brand in this segment. The internet-famous brand Genki Forest's Ran Tea, which emphasizes high fiber and zero calories, has become another highlight in the sugar-free tea segment. Meanwhile, "tea+" takes a different direction, using tea as a base and combining it with different ingredients like fruit juice and milk to win consumer preference through richer flavors. Among these, the "fruit juice + tea" new product direction is developing rapidly. Since Xiaoming Classmate's cold-brewed tea in 2015, "fruit juice + tea" has entered the fast lane, with multiple companies such as Nongfu Spring, Wahaha, and Jinmailang successively entering the category competition. -02- The lemon tea market is attracting attention, Vita is expected to join the 5 billion yuan club "Fruit juice + tea" offers richer flavors than sugar-free tea and is more natural and nutritious than flavored tea. Different tea types and fruit juices can be combined to create a variety of flavors. After surveying flavors available on the market, we found that lemon + black tea is the most common combination. It can be one of the flavors in a brand's product line, such as Tea Pie's lemon black tea, or it can be a brand dedicated solely to lemon tea, like Vita Lemon Tea and Master Kong's Tea Restaurant. Lemon tea, as a classic flavor of Hong Kong-style tea drinks, has a broad consumer base. Master Kong's and Uni-President's iced black teas are essentially flavored lemon black tea beverages, and lemon tea can be seen as an upgraded version of iced black tea. If the latter can be converted to the former, the growth space for lemon tea is enormous. Lemon tea products represented by Vita, in their marketing, emphasize the "astringency" brought by real tea and real fruit juice. The astringency of tea represents an authentic taste, which is an advantage and gives the category a more distinctive character. Both lemon juice and black tea have the effect of reducing fat and cutting grease. The combined effect of the two provides a strong argument for the category's efficacy in cutting grease. Vita Lemon Tea has developed rapidly in recent years. From April 1 to September 30, 2018, its mainland market revenue was 2.535 billion yuan, an increase of 30%. It is estimated that Vita Lemon Tea's annual sales scale is expected to be between 2.5 billion and 3 billion yuan. It is expected to become the next 5 billion yuan blockbuster product. Vita Lemon Tea was born over 40 years ago. After entering the mainland, it gradually expanded northward from its base in South China. In 2016, through netizens' humorous images, it rose from a simple beverage to an "internet-famous" product. After becoming an internet-famous product, Vita Lemon Tea adopted a younger and more playful approach in its overall communication. Through a series of marketing campaigns, it embedded the product concept "Only real tea can be astringent" deeply into consumers' minds, establishing a taste threshold for the lemon tea brand. It can be said that from the perspective of consumer base, sales growth, and product functionality, lemon tea is a niche flavor product with great potential and promising development prospects. The success of Vita Lemon Tea has shown other brands the hope for the tea beverage market above 5 yuan. For brands aiming to enter the mid-to-high-end ready-to-drink tea market, the opportunity in lemon tea should not be missed. -03- New lemon tea products are emerging frequently, How are various players competing for market share? For brand owners, entering a new category inevitably incurs costs. Facing a potential market, brands typically participate in the competition in two ways based on their strengths and resources: one is as a strategic category, concentrating superior resources for product development and promotion, which generally involves larger investments; the other is as a tactical product, closely following the leading brand with me-too products, competing on channel or price advantages, with smaller investments. Today, we will analyze several major brands to see how each operates. 1. Master Kong Tea Restaurant Master Kong's market share in the tea beverage segment has been declining almost year by year in recent years. Its old products like green tea and iced black tea are aging, and it urgently needs a new product to bring freshness to consumers. Tea Restaurant, as a trial product for Master Kong's tea beverages to enter the price band above 5 yuan, is highly anticipated and is clearly a strategic product. Tea Restaurant is positioned as "authentic Hong Kong flavor." According to reports, the brand visited multiple long-established Hong Kong tea restaurants and, after continuous taste adjustments, recreated the classic lemon tea flavor of Hong Kong-style hand-shaken lemon with freshly brewed black tea. The product combines the sweetness of yellow lemon and the tartness of green lemon in a "double lemon pairing," which also serves as a concrete expression of Hong Kong flavor. Its target audience is Generation Z, concentrated among young people aged 15-25 who love authentic Hong Kong-style lemon tea. It uses Hong Kong celebrity William Chan, who loves lemon tea, as its spokesperson to maximize the "authentic Hong Kong flavor" appeal. Master Kong has an incomparable advantage in tea beverage channel construction, enabling new products to achieve nationwide distribution quickly, ensuring product visibility at the point of sale. Combined with online KOL sharing on platforms like Xiaohongshu and offline elevator advertisements, Master Kong is using lemon tea to open a new chapter in its tea beverage defense. 2. Dongpeng Yougan Lemon Tea Dongpeng's current main product is functional beverages, and lemon tea provides a new growth point for the company. Dongpeng's lemon tea was launched in 2019, with a fully upgraded package in 2020. Dongpeng positions its lemon tea as a "king and joker combination," highlighting the flavor characteristics of the "oil citrus + lemon" pairing. The packaging uses the big and small jokers from playing cards to represent lemon tea and oil citrus. The target audience is also Generation Z, so the packaging design leans towards two-dimensional symbols. For the spokesperson, it chose young actress Yang Zi, valuing her influence among young consumers. After its launch in 2019, Yougan Lemon Tea was first trial-marketed in the Guangdong market and gradually expanded to Guangxi and other areas. In 2020, it will continue to deepen its presence in Guangdong while adopting a focused model for other key regions nationwide, gradually achieving a nationwide layout. Through offline activities like the "One Yuan Joy" promotion, terminal material support, distributor activity support, and media placements, it aims to further expand brand influence. 3. Coca-Cola Lemon Tea Coca-Cola has two lemon tea brands: one is Sunny Lemon Tea, launched first in Guangdong, and the other is Xuefeili Lemon Tea, launched in Shanghai. Sunny Lemon Tea was originally a long-established Hong Kong lemon tea brand with some recognition in the South China market. Coca-Cola relaunched the Sunny Lemon Tea brand to enter the Guangdong market. Its packaging style is quite similar to Vita Lemon Tea, available in 250ml cartons and 500ml bottles. This year, Sunny Lemon Tea has also been seen in Beijing, suggesting that it may be promoted as a main brand in the future. Xuefeili is a lemon tea launched by Coca-Cola for the northern market, aiming to capture the northern market through differentiated flavor positioning. It is only available in one packaging specification: 250ml Tetra Pak. Xuefeili is not a brand-new brand; it already has multiple categories under it, such as salt soda and fruit juice drinks. Judging from Coca-Cola's current operating model, lemon tea appears to be a tactical product for the group, leveraging its more complete channel resources to carve out a share of Vita Lemon Tea's market. Whether it's Sunny or Xuefeili, the formulas use black tea powder rather than original leaf extract, suggesting that Coca-Cola has not invested much in product quality upgrades. 4. Uni-President Thai Magic Uni-President also launched Thai Magic lemon tea in 2017, offering consumers a new choice with its differentiated Thai-style lemon tea flavor. In terms of communication, it centered on the annual theme "Too magical, can't stop sipping," using the internet as the main communication channel, leveraging influencers for word-of-mouth, and relying on its unique positioning and magical packaging to make the brand self-propagating. However, its performance is estimated to be not very good, as it was no longer disclosed in the annual report at the end of 2018. 5. Others COFCO Yuehu, Daliyuan Lemon Tea, Panpan Lemon Tea, and other products are all aimed at expanding product lines and enriching consumer choices. They rely on existing distributor channels for promotion. The products emphasize authentic ingredients and highlight product characteristics, but no media support has been observed. From the analysis of the above brands, it can be seen that Master Kong and Dongpeng place more importance on lemon tea products, promoting them as strategic products with significant resource investment expected. Other brands mostly extend their product lines, using channel resources for product promotion, leveraging packaging similar to Vita's, and relying on their own channel advantages to carve out a portion of market share. -04- What changes will occur in the lemon tea landscape next? It can be seen that Tea Restaurant and Yougan Lemon Tea are charging forward with full force, trying to seize a larger share of the lemon tea market. Will Vita Lemon Tea's position be threatened? What trump cards do each brand hold? We have made a simple comparison of the products and marketing of the three brands. From the comparison above, it is clear that Dongpeng Yougan Lemon Tea's sales area is mainly in Guangdong, and its nationwide layout has just begun. In the short term, it is expected to focus mainly on second- and third-tier cities. The real head-on confrontation with Vita is Tea Restaurant. Master Kong has stronger channel advantages, enabling rapid distribution of new products to the point of sale. The company has significant brand advantages in tea beverages, which also provides brand endorsement for Tea Restaurant's launch. However, this does not mean that Tea Restaurant will necessarily succeed. First, the target audiences of the two brands are similar, concentrated among young people aged 15-25. For this group, besides taste, brand personality and image are also important factors in whether they like a brand. A distinct image is more likely to win their affection. Xiaoming Classmate's dry humor, "Tea Pie: Unique in its own way" full of personality, and offline tea shop Heytea conveying inspiration and art, all give brands a fuller character. Vita Lemon Tea has maintained a youthful brand image. Through marketing methods such as developing "rave party gadgets," co-branding with trendy brands to create fashion items, and developing game-customized packaging, Vita Lemon Tea is seen by consumers as a representative of "trendy" and "cool." This trendy, cool brand personality makes users feel more attracted. In contrast, Tea Restaurant focuses on functional benefits, but its emotional benefits are thin, failing to resonate emotionally with users. Second, from consumer feedback, the taste difference between Vita Lemon Tea and Tea Restaurant Lemon Tea is not significant. Regarding Tea Restaurant's "authentic Hong Kong flavor" communication, whether it can hit the target audience's psychology is somewhat questionable. We interviewed ten target consumers, and eight of them said they value taste more; "Hong Kong flavor" did not make it more attractive to them. Vita Lemon Tea originated in Hong Kong and is also a Hong Kong-style lemon tea, so Tea Restaurant's advantage here is not prominent. Additionally, Tea Restaurant's current marketing activities mainly revolve around its spokesperson, which supports short-term sales, but long-term brand growth still relies on brand power and channel strength. Therefore, we believe that Tea Restaurant will not quickly threaten Vita Lemon Tea. If Tea Restaurant wants to win over the target audience, it still needs to differentiate its brand personality from Vita Lemon Tea to gain attention and affection. Currently, the lemon tea market is still dominated by Vita. As the category leader, Vita Lemon Tea also serves as a benchmark in taste and brand style, and it seems difficult to shake its position in the short term! Tips will be paid 400-2000 yuan once adopted.
