Why talk about megatrends today? Because no matter where you are, true megatrends will deeply involve everyone on Earth and reshape a series of complex relationships from countries and cities to businesses and consumers. Looking ahead, we have identified the following ten megatrends. Main text: Frost & Sullivan is a global industry research and consulting firm. Each year, we send surveys to over 1,000 CEOs across various industries worldwide. In this survey, we ask CEOs two important questions:
- What are the significant external challenges you face?
- What are the internal challenges? Over time, we've noticed that answers to internal challenges remain largely unchanged—how to apply the best strategies to run their businesses. However, answers to external challenges always vary. Through this presentation, I aim to help you understand the massive changes happening globally and find action plans to respond to (or participate in) these changes. Before we begin, I want to emphasize that what we truly need to focus on are not the megatrends themselves, but the sub-trends related to us and their potential impacts.
Trend 1: Connectivity and Convergence Sensors and the Internet of Things (IoT) will make the world fully connected. By 2020, the average user will have 5 connected devices, the average household will have 10, and we will see 80 billion connected devices in the market. More importantly, we will see over 5 billion internet users worldwide. High-speed internet infrastructure is also accelerating its penetration. For example, Colombia has made internet access a basic human right, established by the government. **One reason is that governments have realized that accessing information online truly empowers people. Sub-trend 1: Internet Devices There are numerous opportunities to produce products and services that enable faster, more convenient, and lower-cost internet access, whether through access platforms or services. Sub-trend 2: 5G Networks and Real-Time Services What does 5G mean for us? Data upload and download speeds will reach 1 GB per second, and latency will drop below 1 millisecond. This means we can access high-speed internet very stably. A simple analogy: with 4G, downloading an HD movie takes about an hour, or at least several tens of minutes. But with 5G, it can be done in 5-6 seconds. Due to 5G's high speed and stability, we can expect real-time services to emerge. For instance, in future healthcare, we won't need to visit hospitals in person; we can access medical services online 24/7 and consult directly with doctors from different countries and regions. Sub-trend 3: Communication Satellites and Space Congestion Currently, there are 800 satellites orbiting Earth, primarily providing meteorological information and some communication services for their respective countries. However, with the growing need for rich data, we predict that over the next decade, thousands of communication satellites will be launched, potentially leading to satellite congestion in space. Countries with advanced satellite technology, such as the US, China, India, and Japan, will be at the forefront as providers of communication satellites. Sub-trend 4: Virtual Office Environments Future work environments will become increasingly flexible. On-demand meeting spaces and virtual meeting systems will become more popular. If you can provide high-quality interactive platforms like voice calls, video calls, and video conferencing, you will have excellent prospects. Sub-trend 5: Robotics We believe that within the next 5-10 years, everyone here will have the opportunity to own a robot. These robots will become our life assistants, waking us up daily, preparing our clothes and coffee. In fact, in Japan's retail sector, we have already seen successful cases of robot services. If you visit SoftBank, a Japanese mobile service provider, to get a phone, the entire process—from consultation, phone selection, contract signing, phone delivery, to leaving the store—is handled by robots, with no human interaction. Sub-trend 6: Big Data With ubiquitous IoT and sensors, data flooding is inevitable. Faced with this deluge, cleaning and analyzing data becomes more important. Big data has many outputs and applications, such as predictive analytics, supporting business decisions, or dynamic pricing tools (e.g., in insurance: if you have a good driving record, your car insurance premium will be lower; if you're a reckless driver, your premium will be much higher). But the most critical step is bridging the gap from "data analysis" to "meaningful business decisions." Sub-trend 7: Artificial Intelligence Earlier, we discussed data flooding. So when searching and retrieving needed data, we often face the challenge of not getting effective data. Future AI search engines can help solve this problem. By setting conditions, formats, and structures, they can use AI algorithms to collect data online and present it in the format and structure you need. This means that in the future, my industry—market research and information consulting—will also be disrupted. Trend 2: Physical and E-commerce More and more companies are integrating online and offline channels. Take the automotive industry. Typically, we think of 4S dealerships for car sales. But now they are moving online. For example, Audi has an unmanned showroom in London. Customers can see and experience the latest models, understand specifications, make purchase decisions, and place orders—all without human intervention. Tesla is another example. In the US, Tesla completely bypasses dealer networks for car sales. You can order online, purchase insurance, and have the car delivered quickly via logistics. Trend 3: City as Customer In the future, cities will become very important customers for businesses. Globally, we see the rapid formation of mega-cities. Cities like Beijing, Tokyo, New York, and London, despite their already large size, are still growing. However, this process brings severe energy consumption and inadequate infrastructure. Sub-trend 1: Urban Infrastructure Renovation Siemens, ABB, and Cisco have recognized this and have restructured their business models and layouts to better participate in urban development. For instance, Siemens has consolidated resources from its automation, power, and construction divisions into a framework called "Infrastructure and Cities" to design integrated solutions for the mega-city problems we just discussed. Sub-trend 2: Urban Security The larger the city, the higher the security risks. How can security agencies predict crimes before they happen and catch criminals? Biometric fingerprints, facial recognition, and iris scanning technologies will become crucial auxiliary tools, enabling security agencies to quickly and accurately identify good and bad actors. Trend 4: Social Development Trends We need a deeper understanding of different social groups (age, income, gender, etc.). In India, where the youth population is larger, we need to design more products and services for young people. Japan is the opposite; products and services for the elderly are more in demand. Additionally, women's influence and decision-making power will grow stronger. We already see many women in powerful positions. For example, in politics, some developed countries have female leaders. South Korea has a female president, Tokyo just elected its first female governor, and the UK Prime Minister just replaced Cameron with Theresa (a female PM). Perhaps in three months, we might see the US, a superpower, also led by a woman. (Photo: Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg) Therefore, this trend requires us to design products not with men as the default gender, but more from a female perspective. In the automotive industry, manufacturers including Ford, BMW, Chrysler, and Audi have already started developing female-oriented car models. In the future, many other products and services will see similar trends. Trend 5: Beyond BRIC In the past, when discussing economic growth, we first thought of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India, and China). Now the situation is changing: the economies of these four countries have slowed to varying degrees. Growth is emerging in other emerging economies. In Africa, we see Nigeria, Turkey, and Egypt; in Asia-Pacific, Vietnam and Indonesia. These countries are becoming new economic drivers. In fact, China has already participated in investment and development in emerging economies. There are many Chinese investment projects in Africa and the Middle East. If you want to participate in future economic development, you can likely find an easy way. Trend 6: Innovating to Zero Using the "Innovating to Zero" mindset, you can effectively design products and solutions. What does "Innovating to Zero" mean? It means zero emissions, zero failures, zero waste, and zero pollution. If you can present a product solution to the Beijing government that achieves zero waste or zero pollution, I guarantee you'll get an order immediately. Trend 7: New Business Models: Providing Value to More People In business model innovation, we see several themes: personalization, co-creation, and co-development. Personalization. In the past, personalized services used one-to-one or one-to-many models. Now, many-to-many models can also achieve customization and personalization, while leveraging commercial operations for scale benefits. Alibaba does this best: on its platform, any user can purchase raw materials and products from any supplier. Co-creation. Xiaomi in China does this well. Today, you can submit suggestions for future Xiaomi products on their website; if adopted, you'll be rewarded by the company. If we look at global innovation investment ratios, we see that 75% of funds go to incremental innovations like product innovation, process innovation, and delivery model innovation—making products faster, better, with more color options, etc. But these are not true innovation. Only 15% is truly used for strategic and business model innovation. Moreover, investment in business model innovation often yields higher returns than product innovation. Trend 8: Wellness and Welfare Healthcare costs are rising in both developed and developing countries. Governments spend a lot on medical services and insurance for their people. In the future, we will not only provide treatment after illness but also preventive and predictive care before illness. Through smart wearable devices, we can encourage healthy habits and prevent chronic diseases in advance. Trend 9: The Future of Energy In the next 5-10 years, we will see a large-scale energy revolution, and traditional power companies will face complete disruption. In the future, each of us will simultaneously be both electricity consumers and generators. Tesla has established a power factory in the US, researching advanced energy storage devices to make every household a potential energy provider. Households can generate electricity not only for their own needs but also sell surplus power to the state for income. Buildings will not only be more energy-efficient but also become energy collectors. Centralized power generation will become increasingly decentralized. At the same time, new battery technologies are emerging. Trend 10: The Future of Automobiles Due to high population density in large cities, transportation will become an indicator of urban quality. In big cities like Beijing, everyone should deeply feel that buying, driving, parking, and maintaining cars are heavy burdens. In the future, multiple solutions for smart urban mobility will emerge. One crucial solution is the proliferation of autonomous vehicles. Especially in the US, we predict that in the very near future, autonomous vehicles based on telematics will appear in our daily lives. Why do we need to understand these megatrends? Whether you are in a startup or working in a large enterprise, you need to understand:
- How people will consume products and services in the future.
- What needs will emerge that don't exist today. This is what we call the process of forward-looking innovation. We suggest you identify sub-trends relevant to your industry within the framework of the 10 megatrends and study their potential impacts on your industry. On the other hand, assess whether existing product solutions can meet future needs and try to develop products or services that might influence the future.
