It's been over half a year since Jack Ma proposed 'New Retail,' and you still don't get it? What? Too many explanations have confused you. Let's make it super simple. Once upon a time, this is how goods reached us. Everyone made money, and this happy state lasted for many years, until a retailer called the hypermarket appeared. The hypermarket said, 'The old way is too low-end; that's the traditional channel. Let me show you what a modern channel is.' Relying on prime locations and heavy foot traffic, this hypermarket model really took off, and various products rushed to get into hypermarkets. The hypermarket then said, 'There are too many products in my store now. If you want to sell here, you must pay a fee; it's called an entry fee.' With too many products, even if you get in, you might not sell well. What to do? Pay up! I'll give you end-cap displays, posters, and promotions. So, hypermarkets and some chain convenience store systems transformed themselves, not only making money from product margins but mainly from fees. Many retailers saw this and thought, 'This is a good method, ensuring steady income regardless of conditions,' and gradually learned it. This so-called modern channel can be called 'New Retail 1.0.' In recent years, e-commerce has developed, also directly learning from New Retail 1.0 practices, making money by charging management fees and advertising fees. Taobao is called an e-commerce platform, but it's not actually a retailer; it's like an online real estate developer and advertiser. The retail work is left to the upstream, usually the manufacturers, which is called 'no middleman to take a cut.' It's anti-specialization, forcing manufacturers to be brand owners, logistics providers, and retailers all at once. Although e-commerce platforms are currently making a fortune, if they kill all the chickens, they won't have eggs to eat. So, a company that isn't actually a retailer proposed 'New Retail,' which can be considered 'New Retail 2.0.' Pure e-commerce will die; the future is the integration of online and offline, with omnichannel integration, product, membership, and service connectivity. Then Alibaba Research Institute even released a New Retail report to explain it. What does it mean? Sellers are losing money and can't continue, and buyers' satisfaction is low. What to do? This way, there's infinite imagination space, so let's continue playing happily here. For consumers, 'always feeling served' and 'exceeding expectations' are unrealistic hopes; the biggest wish is to buy quality products at low prices, or at least to buy genuine products. If there is truly New Retail, it must be derived from the consumer level, with new retail formats that can buy and sell well, do marketing, understand operations, and communicate with consumers, which will deal a devastating blow to platforms that just sit and collect rent.
