In 2020, the sales scale of the top 100 supermarkets reached 968 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 4.4%, accounting for about 5.5% of the total annual social FMCG retail sales; the total number of stores of the top 100 supermarket enterprises was 31,000, an increase of 7.4% over the previous year. Among them, large supermarkets (6,000 m² and above) accounted for about 14.4% of total stores, supermarkets (2,000-6,000 m²) about 12.3%, and community supermarkets (less than 2,000 m²) about 73.3%. Basic Information Among the top 100 supermarket enterprises, 18 are headquartered in first-tier cities, 30 in provincial capitals and separately listed cities, and 52 in third- and fourth-tier cities. 51 develop within their province, while 49 develop across provinces. The scale distribution of the top 100 supermarket enterprises is basically stable: 19 enterprises have sales exceeding 10 billion yuan, and 64 have sales below 5 billion yuan. The top ten enterprises achieved sales of 604.78 billion yuan, accounting for 62.5% of the total sales of the top 100. In 2020, 15 enterprises achieved double-digit growth in both sales and stores, namely Wumart, Qian Dama, Tianhong, Henan Dazhang, Hunan Jiahui, Nanyang Wandelong, Heilongjiang Biyoute, Shenzhen Meiyiduo, Xiamen Yuanchu, Andeli, Fresh Legend, Taizhou Sanhe, Gansu Xinle, Guangdong Tianhe, and Gansu Dongfang Baijia. 32 enterprises saw a year-on-year decline in sales, and 26 saw a decline in store numbers. Most enterprises achieved positive growth in sales and stores in 2020. Key Operating Indicators In 2020, the average sales per square meter of the top 100 supermarkets was 14,617 yuan/m², a year-on-year decrease of 654 yuan/m². By segment, large supermarkets averaged 13,508 yuan/m², slightly up from the previous year; supermarkets averaged 15,248 yuan/m²; community supermarkets averaged 21,740 yuan/m². The top 100 supermarkets employed about 1.1 million people. Through staff reduction and efficiency improvement, average sales per employee reached 940,000 yuan/person, an increase of 15,000 yuan/person year-on-year. Sales per employee in first-, second-, third-, and fourth-tier cities were 1.136 million yuan/person, 1.096 million yuan/person, 859,000 yuan/person, and 655,000 yuan/person, respectively; in the eastern region, it was 1.038 million yuan/person, central region 875,000 yuan/person, and western region 749,000 yuan/person. Average wages in the top 100 supermarkets increased by 4.8% compared with 2019, with payroll accounting for 6.5% of sales. Rent accounted for 2.5% of sales. The average inventory turnover days for the top 100 supermarkets were 40.2 days. Large supermarkets had 40.6 days; supermarkets 41.6 days; community supermarkets 38.3 days. The average gross margin of the top 100 supermarkets was 17.9%. Digitalization, Supply Chain, Private Label, and Online Business Member digitalization. In 2020, digital members accounted for 45.3% of total members in the top 100 supermarkets, up 14.8 percentage points year-on-year. Spending by digital members accounted for 29.3% of total member spending, up 6.0 percentage points year-on-year. Supply chain construction. In 2020, the average unified distribution rate of the top 100 supermarkets reached 62.3%, up 5.6 percentage points year-on-year; distribution center area accounted for 20.5% of total business area, up 0.3 percentage points. Private label development. In 2020, the top 100 supermarkets had an average of over 900 private label SKUs, with sales accounting for 4.2%. Multi-model online retail. The top 100 supermarkets increased online sales by increasing online SKUs, launching community group buying, and live streaming. The average number of online SKUs rose from over 8,300 to over 11,000; 60% of enterprises carried out community group buying, forming group leader teams mainly composed of their own employees, with group buying sales accounting for 0.7% of total sales; 70% of enterprises carried out online live streaming, with live streaming sales accounting for 0.1% of total sales. Live streaming is not only about sales for supermarkets, but also an effective window for brand building, new product promotion, and franchisee education. In 2020, the store coverage rate for home delivery services in the top 100 supermarkets increased to 65.1%, and online sales accounted for an average of 5.0%.
