Coca-Cola's Fastest Growth: Is It Really Because There Are More Happy Fat Guys?

In Kantar Worldpanel's 2019 China Brand Footprint Report, Coca-Cola unexpectedly became the brand with the largest increase in consumer reach points, breaking the dominance of Chinese brands in the fastest-growing brand rankings. However, categories are performing in a 'two-speed' pattern: categories favored by blue-collar workers, such as instant noodles and cheap beer, are growing very slowly or even declining due to a shrinking manufacturing workforce, while products favored by the rising middle class, such as yogurt and pet food, are growing rapidly.

China's economic transformation is significantly affecting shopping patterns. While mass-market products aimed at blue-collar workers struggle, premium categories like yogurt and pet food, as well as mid-to-high-end products in most categories, continue to grow. Kantar Worldpanel China reports that FMCG sales grew only 3.5% in 2015, a five-year low, but this masks the divergent growth rates across categories and channels.
