On February 20, 1999, the fifth day of the Chinese New Year, a time for family reunions, a "madman" stood in the sparsely furnished living room of Room 202, Unit 1, Building 16, Lakeside Garden, and declared ambitiously, "We will build the greatest internet company in the world, founded by Chinese people." Seventeen people, mostly sitting on the floor, listened. That speaker was Jack Ma, and his audience were the 17 founders of Alibaba. The creation of Alibaba began that year.
