Preface: Recently, many functional new products have been launched in the dairy market, such as Mengniu's Tianxing yogurt for sobering up, Manran for weight loss, and Wanshanghao for sleep aid; Guangming's Jiuqian Yike hangover-relief yogurt; and Yili's "Y-Milk Future Milk" platform, which solicits various functional milks like rapid hangover-relief milk and muscle-building milk. Undoubtedly, functional milk is becoming a new trend in dairy R&D. Why are dairy giants flocking to develop functional milk? Will functional milk trigger the next wave of innovation? If so, what patterns govern the direction of new dairy products? These questions merit deeper exploration.

From History to Future: Functionalization is Inevitable Before answering these questions, let's review the dairy industry from a category development perspective. With economic growth and rising consumer income, more people are recognizing the importance of milk. The slogan "A cup of milk a day, strengthens the Chinese people" has educated the public about milk consumption. As infrastructure improved and processing techniques advanced, dairy products evolved through a series of stages: "milk powder—ambient liquid milk—chilled liquid milk—chilled yogurt—cheese." In each category innovation, products progressed from basic to advanced, continuously evolving and upgrading. Here, we take liquid milk as an example to analyze its evolution. The basic pure milk product is pasteurized fresh milk, which has a short shelf life and limited transportation radius, making it difficult to form a national brand. With the application of UHT (Ultra-High Temperature), Yili first expanded the milk category nationwide, achieving national popularity. Further, as consumer demand for liquid milk upgraded, pure milk products underwent the following "upgraded variants":

  1. Based on age differences, children's milk, student milk, and adult milk were developed;
  2. Based on purchasing power differences, combined with milk source and cow breed characteristics, high-end milk and organic milk were introduced to meet the needs of affluent and middle-class consumers;
  3. Based on "milk + X" (where X is an additive), sub-categories like fruit milk and cereal milk were created, enriching milk choices;
  4. Based on physiological characteristics, lactose-free products were developed to serve lactose-intolerant consumers. If the first three categories still target regular milk drinkers, the fourth expands the consumer base further. It's clear that milk category expansion primarily uses physiological labels to develop matching products, increasing consumption frequency and volume. In fact, the brand pyramid for each sub-category is largely complete, with leading brands in each track that are hard to displace. The conventional dairy market has entered a stage of competition among giants, where later brands have limited space. This pattern also applies to other dairy categories, so sales growth for dairy companies comes not only from competing in existing tracks but also from new tracks. Due to differences in R&D capabilities and foresight, sub-categories can experience curve-overtaking. Therefore, accurately predicting consumer demand is crucial, as it determines whether new products can unlock sufficient sales potential.

Milk + Function: Pursuing "Foodism" First, let's analyze the functional principles of the latest functional dairy products to find the underlying reasons for category development. 1. Mengniu Tianxing: Targeting young consumers in gatherings, parties, and business socializing, it meets the psychology of enjoying life while maintaining health, with the slogan "Your drinking companion." The formula includes kudzu root powder, a medicinal and edible ingredient with hangover-relief effects, and a key component in many hangover pills. Although it's a hangover-relief product, it's positioned as a flavored yogurt, with mango flavor added through food flavorings. 2. Mengniu Manran: Meal replacement and body-shaping products have seen significant market growth in the past two years. With consumption upgrades, consumers demand balanced nutrition and health from meal replacements. According to FBIF data, the meal replacement market is expected to exceed 10 billion yuan by 2020. Leveraging dairy's high nutritional value, adding functional factors that provide satiety and meal replacement effects amplifies milk's meal replacement benefits, with each bottle's energy controlled at 195 kcal. According to Manran's ingredient information, its weight-loss meal replacement works through three mechanisms:

  1. Increasing dietary fiber: adding oat grains and resistant dextrin to milk. Oats are rich in dietary fiber, making them a good meal replacement food; resistant dextrin is a water-soluble dietary fiber that isn't absorbed, promotes intestinal motility, regulates gut flora, inhibits cholesterol absorption in the small intestine, and lowers postprandial blood sugar;
  2. Adding conjugated linoleic acid glyceride (CLA glyceride). CLA has recently sparked a trend in European and American health foods. According to encyclopedic sources, CLA reduces the relative proportion of fat, meaning it only reduces fat while increasing "lean" mass, which is good news for dieters;
  3. Using maltitol instead of white sugar in a low-sugar formula to reduce sugar absorption. 3. Mengniu Sleep-Aid Milk: This product isn't available on Tmall or JD.com; information comes from third-party platforms. It uses Tetra Pak Dream Cap, with a fresh design, and emphasizes gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), which has been scientifically proven to inhibit neurotransmitters and have a calming effect. It also contains sour jujube seeds and poria powder, medicinal and edible ingredients with sedative effects, making it a product combining technology and food therapy. 4. Guangming Jiuqian Yike: Compared to Mengniu Tianxing, its functional attributes and consumption timing are clearer. Its slogan is: "Drink with goji, ginger protects you." Unlike Tianxing's kudzu root, Jiuqian Yike adds curcumin and goji berries to yogurt, focusing on liver protection, enhancing liver defense, and alleviating dizziness and headaches. From the above analysis, functional milk development follows a "milk + functional factor" model. Functional factors can be Chinese medicinal and edible ingredients or scientifically supported molecules like GABA. Through formula combinations, brands establish efficacy support points. Currently, post-90s and post-95s generations, due to life and work pressures, are increasing their health supplement consumption year by year. By combining dairy with pharmaceuticals and supplements, low-frequency health needs are elevated to high-frequency consumption, increasing consumption opportunities and reducing psychological burden.

Next Stop: Where Will Functional Dairy Go? Based on the above exploration, we believe that past products revolved around major functional needs, meeting relatively universal demands, creating one 10-billion-yuan mega product after another. But in the future, such mega products will no longer exist. Because future dairy will be more segmented. For example, needs like stress relief, energy replenishment, and fatigue recovery will be matched with "goods" based on "people and scenarios." For instance, within the broad stress-relief scenario, subdividing by actual consumption scenarios and target groups will create hot sellers in niche "circles." Companies can also build brand topics and niche authority along these lines. Following this thinking, segmentation can be by gender: for female consumers, beauty, skincare, and achieving a rosy complexion are common needs. This could lead to beauty dairy products containing collagen peptides for skin improvement, combining food therapy and nourishment; Segmentation by physiological stage: developing dairy for pregnant women. Post-85s and post-90s are now the main group of expectant mothers, with upgraded consumption. Proper nutrition intake during pre-pregnancy, early, mid, and late pregnancy is a new focus. However, current dairy products for pregnant women are mainly canned milk powder around 600g, with a single format that's inconvenient to carry. Expectant mothers today balance pregnancy and career, so a single format can't meet their needs. Product development can build on this. Combining consumer life scenarios, such as developing energy dairy products. With faster work and life rhythms, consumers need quick nutrition replenishment and mental alertness to get into work mode. There are many similar scenarios, such as dairy for outdoor sports to quickly replenish energy and recover strength; or eye-care products for heavy electronic device users prone to eye fatigue. By continuously segmenting people and scenarios, products with market potential can be found.

Finally: As new products become more specialized and segmented, targeted product development, combined with precise media reach and channel placement, can attract more accurate users, improve acquisition and repurchase, build brand loyalty, and further drive category development. While it may be hard to recreate 10-billion-yuan mega products in scale, precise development can yield better profit margins and brand influence.
