Trend: Become a Category Operator, Not a Product Portfolio Distributor!

The transformation of distributors involves not only changes in business models but also in product portfolio strategies. Traditional product portfolios fall into three types: all well-known brands, well-known brands plus second- and third-tier brands, and mainly non-well-known brands. However, these classic approaches are now being challenged by new factors such as the difficulties of major brands, price transparency, bottom-line safety, category integration, and increased product innovation.

The Trade-offs of a Billion-Yuan Product

Whether a product with 1 billion yuan in sales counts as a blockbuster depends on the industry and company stage. For Yili and Mengniu, it's the minimum threshold for new products, while for Uni-President, it's the maximum. This reflects different industry dynamics: dairy is still growing and favors super blockbusters, while food and beverage is more segmented and personalized, making 1 billion yuan a realistic ceiling.

A Look at Outstanding Companies That Don't Assess Sales Performance

At a New Marketing course in January, the author noticed that three of the invited companies, and four others he knew, do not assess sales performance. New Products Die Too Fast Because Distribution Rate Is Too High

A senior executive from an industry giant said that distribution is no longer a problem, but sell-through is. This is not an isolated phenomenon but a common one. The reason is that most companies still follow traditional deep distribution practices: distribution plus sell-through. Since distribution is easy, the real issue lies in product cognition during upgrades, which requires precise distribution, experience, and word-of-mouth.

Farewell to B-end Deep Distribution, Welcome C-end Deep Distribution

Two years ago, I discussed with friends the question of 'where is deep distribution heading.' The routine tasks of deep distribution, such as distribution, visits, shelf management, and promotions, have been stuck for years: not doing them is not an option, but doing them brings no growth. At that time, I concluded that deep distribution would evolve towards precision and efficiency. However, I have now changed my view. If the deep distribution proposed around 2003 is called 'B-end deep distribution,' the current deep distribution should be called 'C-end deep distribution.' B-end deep distribution goes as deep as the terminal; C-end deep distribution goes deeper to the consumer.

Don't Underestimate Community E-commerce: Big Internet Platforms Often Start with 'Underestimation'

Community e-commerce, a form of R2C (Retailer to Consumer), is emerging as a major opportunity, despite initial skepticism due to its low-end and chaotic nature.
