What's Wrong with Hema?
In March 2019, two speeches stirred the stagnant new retail sector, both centered on Hema, the most important benchmark case. One was Hema CEO Hou Yi's admission at a forum that the company's "pit-filling battle" had led peers into a trap; the other was Alibaba CEO Zhang Yong's internal message at a Hema management meeting: "Hema must sprint to survive, and run longer."
