Over the past 15 years, those experts riding on horses have failed, but we survived. Because we think about the future, we believe in the future, we change ourselves, and we never complain about others. Recently, the Asia Society announced the inaugural 'Changemakers' award winners and held an award ceremony. 13 individuals or teams who have made outstanding innovations and contributions to the development of Asia received this honor. As the only Chinese entrepreneur representative, I topped the inaugural 'Changemakers' list. The following is my speech transcript: Standing here, I feel very honored and humble. I never thought that in my lifetime I would have the opportunity to come to the United Nations. Thank you very much to the Asia Society. At the age of 12, I started learning English by myself. I didn't know why, but I just fell in love with the language. At that time, every morning at 5 o'clock, I would ride my bike for 40 minutes to a hotel in Hangzhou to find foreign tourists. They taught me English, and in exchange, I showed them around the city. Since then, I have developed a habit of using my own brain to think about problems, taking a few extra minutes. When everyone says yes, wait a few minutes; when everyone says no, also wait a few minutes, and think carefully about the matter itself. Because when you look at the world from a different perspective, you may also do things in a different way. Tonight, I am deeply inspired by all these changemakers. Listening to their stories, I realize that there are so many things I can do in the world, so many things I can do better, and so many things we can do together. Today, I represent not only myself, but also all the small people and small businesses that work with me. When I left university in 1995, I told the principal that I wanted to be an entrepreneur and do internet. He asked me: What is the internet? I replied: I don't know either. After listening to me for two hours, he said, Jack, I know you want to do something big, but I don't understand what you do. However, if you want to come back in ten years, then come back. I said: Okay, in ten years, if I want to come back, I will come back. As a teacher, you always believe in the future. You believe that knowledge can change people's lives, and you believe and hope that your students will be better than you. Students are the best product. Today I am no longer a teacher, but I believe that in a company, the CEO stands for 'Chief Education Officer'. Because I talk a lot, my colleagues don't like me. But I am responsible for talking, and they are responsible for doing. In the era when I started my business, it was very difficult to be a small entrepreneur in China. It took me 5 months to borrow 500 US dollars, and the company still failed. At that time, I had no opportunities, and I didn't know how to run a business. When I registered my first company, I wanted to name it Internet. The registration office told me, no, this word is not in the dictionary, you must choose another name to register the company. He suggested I use Computer Consulting Company, but I didn't even know what a computer was. So my first company was called Hangzhou Hope Computer Consulting Company. It was very hard at that time, and I knew nothing about technology and computers. Over the past 15 years, I often said that I was a blind man riding on a blind tiger, but those experts riding on horses have failed, and we survived. Because we think about the future, we believe in the future, we change ourselves, and we never complain about others. In my apartment, I told the team that we must prove ourselves, because if we can succeed, then 80% of young people in China can succeed. We don't have a rich father or an influential uncle, we haven't taken a penny from the government, and we haven't taken a penny from the bank. We started from scratch. So I must work hard, not only to prove ourselves, but also to prove our generation and the power of the internet. This is what I want to share with young people. Another thing I deeply believe in is: small is beautiful. If there is no help for small people, then I will use the internet to help small people. Multinational companies are well taken care of by Wall Street, but only small businesses have no one to help them. If we create value for them, then we will succeed. Our philosophy is: if you help others succeed, you will succeed. I have always been a person who believes in the future, believes in young people, and believes in innovation. As the Secretary-General said, the world today has many troubles, and society is full of complaints. I also complained when I was in my 20s. Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, they were big companies and we were helpless small companies, they were too big. At that time, we also complained. But now I no longer complain, because we have become one of the big guys. What I want to tell young people is that if most people are complaining, that is where the opportunity lies. Some people choose to complain, while others choose to change themselves and help change others. Opportunities lie where people complain. I always believe this, and that's how we have come step by step to where we are today. Last but most important, everyone here will be given a T-shirt. This is a special limited edition Alibaba IPO T-shirt. All these T-shirts are made by small people, our small businesses. This is to give to small people, small is beautiful, small has power. Printed on the T-shirt is the Alibaba success code that few people know. Just like 'Open Sesame', Alibaba also has a code, which is 'Dreams are necessary, what if they come true one day?'
