As social beings, we come to society and interact with it to exchange for the resources we want. Many people then think, "I haven't managed my time well, I haven't learned this or that," so they study this and that, working hard but aimlessly, only to end up with more loss than gain.

In fact, many phenomena point to one issue: in this society, you only need to cultivate two essential things:

  • Your inner cognitive structure: how you view this world.
  • Your external social network structure: how you acquire resources.

The bridge between the two is the various abilities you develop. Through your abilities, you solidify your inner cognition and strengthen your social relationships. So many things cannot be solved by time alone. If you don't understand how others acquire wealth, based on your current efficiency, you might deduce a simple, crude struggle model: "If I don't eat or drink for 100 years, I can buy a house somewhere."

So, when we rethink time management, the question we need to consider is: How to use time to do efficient things, rather than doing things that look like hard work but are actually just laziness.

1. Restructure Your Inner Cognitive Structure

When your inner self becomes extremely strong (successful people have strong inner selves), only then will you avoid inner resistance and emotional drain when taking action, thereby increasing your action efficiency. When you hesitate over something, others have already done it. There is no right or wrong in inner cognitive structures: robbers have robbers' logic, hooligans have hooligans' logic, scientists have scientists' logic, and businessmen have businessmen's logic. So how you view the world determines the ways and means you acquire resources.

In fact, many people are stuck in a dual cognitive structure of "saying one thing and doing another," so they cannot achieve "unity of knowledge and action." When the goal they need to act on conflicts with their cognitive beliefs, resistance and hesitation occur.

2. Optimize Your Social Relationship Structure

Make your social relationship structure diverse, so that during information exchange, you encounter more feedback and interaction, allowing you to better understand whether your expression and abilities are being responded to by the other party. Have you heard: "Your income is the average of the five best friends around you"? This concept means that you can find living examples of how to understand wealth acquisition in your social network.

Different ways of acquiring resources determine the efficiency of resource acquisition. If your social relationship structure consists of people at the same level, you will take it for granted. But when you become a member of another circle and understand how people in that circle acquire resources, the clash of viewpoints and sparks of thought will lead you to rearrange various knowledge and create new ideas. These need to be validated by social relationship structures from different industries and levels.

Why does "It's Hard for Poor Families to Produce Nobles" (寒门难出贵子) illustrate this? Teachers' children become teachers; civil servants' children become civil servants; businessmen's children become businessmen. Because the benefits and obstacles brought by your social relationship structure have invisibly determined your development destiny. So you can understand: people are born unequal.

3. Strengthen the Ability Bridge Between the Two Relationships

If you are given a task to explain to an entrepreneur who hasn't read "Zero to One" what the book is about, how would you do it? This is the challenge of crossing from the reading group circle to the entrepreneurship group circle. The bridge in between is your expression and communication skills. When you become a member of one circle and have the ability to interact with people from another circle, your expression and communication skills will be greatly enhanced.

So, for information interaction and resource exchange between different circles, it is very important to learn writing, PPT presentation, public speaking, coordination, organization, and empathy skills.

Thus, we see many office workers learning mind maps, painting, oral English, health preservation, and this and that, appearing to gain a lot, but in fact not. Because if you learn a skill but it doesn't help you optimize your social structure resources, enhance your inner cognition, or strengthen your abilities, even if you are an expert and share your knowledge, any experience that cannot be replicated is just self-indulgence. This is why we see software developers self-indulgently writing 100,000 lines of code, only to have the client say it doesn't meet requirements and needs to be redone; the client complains about the developer's incompetence, and the developer complains the client is an idiot. This is actually a communication problem between two knowledge systems.
