In communication with customers, salespeople must not only use polite language and maintain a humble attitude but also pay attention to details in the way they converse. There are seven verbal habits to avoid when talking with customers.
(1) Avoid "Shutting Up" During Conversations with Customers "Shutting up" means staying silent, which can cause an awkward pause and lead to negative consequences. If you remain silent while the customer is speaking enthusiastically, it may be perceived as a lack of interest in what they are saying. If a conversation that was going well suddenly stops, it might be interpreted as a protest or boredom with the topic. Therefore, if an unintentional pause occurs, a salesperson should quickly introduce a new topic or shift the conversation to re-engage the customer.
(2) Avoid "Interrupting" During Conversations with Customers "Interrupting" means cutting off the customer while they are speaking. Generally, salespeople should not interrupt customers; doing so is disrespectful and oversteps boundaries. If you wish to express a different opinion, wait until the customer has finished. If you want to add something, first ask for permission by saying, "Please allow me to add a point," then interject. However, interruptions should be brief and infrequent to avoid disrupting the customer's train of thought. If you must interrupt due to an urgent matter, apologize first.
(3) Avoid "Foul Language" During Conversations with Customers "Foul language" refers to using vulgar or uncivilized words. A professional salesperson should never use such language.
(4) Avoid "Slippery Talk" During Conversations with Customers "Slippery talk" means being overly glib and making endless, inappropriate jokes. Humor is a sign of refinement, and using it appropriately can help people relax and feel at ease. It can also provide aesthetic pleasure, criticism, and satire. However, humor must be used with consideration for the occasion and the audience, and it should be appropriate to your role. Overusing humor can come across as insincere and may annoy customers.
(5) Avoid "Chatty Talk" During Conversations with Customers "Chatty talk" refers to talking too much nonsense and making inappropriate jokes. People who do this often tease, mock, or belittle customers. They either talk just to fill silence or ramble on endlessly. Such behavior is both contemptible and irritating.
(6) Avoid "Argumentative Talk" During Conversations with Customers "Argumentative talk" means being fond of arguing and quibbling. Such people believe they are always right and that "truth is always in their hands." Salespeople who are argumentative, who "argue even when they are wrong and never let others win," are not well-received by customers.
(7) Avoid "Sharp-Tongued Talk" During Conversations with Customers "Sharp-tongued talk" means being sarcastic and hurtful with words. Every customer has their own privacy, and when they deliberately avoid a topic, a salesperson should not pry. Everyone has weaknesses they do not want to expose, so avoid bringing up sensitive topics. As the saying goes, "A kind word warms the winter, but a harsh word chills the summer." Those with sharp tongues make enemies everywhere and violate the business principle of "harmony brings wealth," ultimately leading to negative outcomes.
