The bottom and lid of ordinary three-piece cans have the same shape, size, and manufacturing method, collectively called lids. The former was used earlier, but because solder contains lead, it is being phased out; the latter can avoid lead pollution, has low energy consumption, and low material consumption, but the production equipment is complex. Three-piece cans have the characteristics of good rigidity, the ability to produce various shapes, high material utilization, easy size changes, mature production processes, and a wide variety of packaged products. (2) Two-piece cans: Two-piece cans emerged in the mid-20th century. The entire packaging can consists of two parts, the body and the lid, hence the name "two-piece can." The body of a two-piece can is formed by drawing a metal sheet through a stretching die with a punch press, causing it to deform and making the bottom and body integral. There are various classifications of two-piece can bodies: by height, they are divided into shallow-drawn and deep-drawn cans; by material, into aluminum and iron cans; by manufacturing technology, into drawn and ironed (DWI) cans and deep-drawn and ironed (DDI) cans. Compared to three-piece cans, two-piece cans have the following advantages:
- Good sealing: The body is formed directly by the drawing process without leakage, eliminating the need for leak detection.
- Ensures product quality: Two-piece cans do not require welding, avoiding lead contamination from soldered cans, and can withstand high-temperature sterilization, ensuring product hygiene.
- Aesthetic appeal: The body has no seams, is attractive, and can be continuously printed for decoration with good results.
- High production efficiency: Two-piece cans have only two parts, and the body manufacturing process is simple, which is beneficial for simplifying the process and increasing production capacity.
- Saves raw materials: The body of a two-piece can is stretched and deformed during forming, making the wall thinner than that of a three-piece can; additionally, the body is integrally formed without longitudinal seams or bottom seams, saving material. However, two-piece cans have higher requirements for material properties, can-making technology, and equipment, and the types of fillable products are fewer. Applications Currently, metal cans used for packaging are mainly aluminum two-piece cans. Aluminum two-piece cans use aluminum alloy sheet as the material, and during manufacturing, a thinning and stretching process is used, so the wall thickness is significantly thinner than the bottom. When used for beer packaging, the strong internal pressure compensates for the rigidity of the thin wall. Moreover, the high gas barrier, light-blocking, and sealing properties of metal cans keep the beer quality stable.
