Source: New Food Imported food is undoubtedly a new highlight in the food industry. Imported delicacies such as Taiwanese pinecone pastries, Youyi brand Vietnamese breadsticks, Korean seaweed, Philippine mango juice, Richeese wafer biscuits, and Schnitzer fruit muesli are now familiar to foodies, not to mention imported milk, infant formula, and imported red wine that are even more integrated into daily life... Nowadays, the imported food market is increasingly booming. High-end imported food is growing faster in second- and third-tier markets than in first-tier cities; among imported alcoholic beverages, more and more people are falling in love with wine; imported food also favors holiday markets, with profits accounting for as much as 40% of the annual total... What does the future hold for imported food? Big data will tell you. Please see the simple and straightforward graphic explanation below.
- Maintaining double-digit rapid growth, with frequency and penetration bringing more increments, and consumer demand driving new opportunities in the future. Imported food sales have increased year by year, but the average price has shown a negative growth (-3.4%). While volume increases, the average price declines. The only truth is that imported food has many promotions.
- Holiday consumption becomes a major focus, county- and prefecture-level cities grow faster, and online shopping and overseas purchases grow even faster. Imported food shows obvious holiday characteristics, with the Spring Festival and National Day contributing nearly 40% of its annual sales. This confirms an old saying in the retail industry: "Those who win the Spring Festival and National Day win the world." Consumers in prefecture-level cities and above are the main buyers of imported food. The growth rates in county-level and prefecture-level cities in the past two years have been significantly higher than in provincial capitals and key cities. While seizing business opportunities in big cities, the purchasing power of lower-tier cities cannot be ignored. The gift channel is the main channel for imported food, accounting for about 30% of the share, so don't forget to customize gift packaging for your products. In the past two years, overseas purchases and online shopping have contributed significant growth. Among them, overseas purchases grew by 33% last year, and online shopping by 25%.
- Healthier and more nutritious imported foods are more favored by consumers. In the 2014 imported food sales, milk powder had the highest share, reaching 20.92 billion yuan, followed by snack foods (14.52 billion yuan) and nutritional products (14.05 billion yuan). Among snack foods and candies, imported biscuits and chocolates are the most popular among Chinese consumers.
- In the 2015 Spring Festival market, imported chocolate performed better than domestic chocolate. Compared with domestic chocolate, imported chocolate is more expensive per unit and has larger packaging. Consumers tend to choose imported chocolate for gifting.
- Wine stands out among imported alcoholic beverages. During the Spring Festival, domestic wine performs better than imported wine. In the FMCG channel, the consumption ratio of domestic wine to imported wine is close to 9:1. Gifting is an important use of imported wine. Although imported wine also shows obvious holiday characteristics, domestic wine relies more on Spring Festival sales.
- Imported milk grew by as much as 43.6%, performing well across all channels. The high growth rate mainly came from taking market share from other dairy products. Whole milk, plain flavor, and sugar-free products performed well. The share of online channels for imported milk is rising, with growth mainly coming from hypermarkets and online channels. Imported milk is mainly whole milk, plain flavor, and sugar-free products. Health and low sugar are the biggest demands.
