There was a clever young man who aspired to be a success. Yet, as years passed, he failed repeatedly. So, he decided to visit a wise man to seek the secret of success.
"Persistence," the wise man said after listening to the young man's story. To prove this assertion, he told a thought-provoking tale:
A father wanted to hunt on Wild Boar Ridge and first sent his three sons to scout the path separately. The eldest rode a horse for three days, crossed three mountains, and reached an endless grassland. Learning he still had to cross a swamp, he turned back. The second son walked for four days, crossed a swamp, but was blocked by a mountain and returned. Another day later, the third son returned, travel-worn, and excitedly reported to his father that it only took five days to reach Wild Boar Ridge. The father smiled with satisfaction: "Son, you're right. Actually, I've been there before!" The three sons looked at their father in confusion, and he said solemnly: "When others stop moving forward, if you continue to advance, you'll find that the so-called distant place is really not that far."
The young man pondered the story for a while and found it quite reasonable.
"Goals," the wise man said again. To prove this point, he told another intriguing story:
The father and his four sons arrived at Wild Boar Ridge. The father asked the eldest, "What do you see?" The eldest replied, "I see hunting rifles and this endless mountain range!"
The father shook his head and asked the second son. The second son answered, "I see rifles, Dad, eldest brother, younger brother, and the mountains!" The father shook his head again and asked the third son.
The third son replied, "I only see the prey." The father said happily, "Right! Life is like this. Sometimes you must carefully observe everything around you, but more often, you should know what you want to do!"
The young man thought about this for a while and felt it also made sense.
"Opportunity," the wise man said again. To support this view, he told another philosophical story.
When the three sons set out, the father advised them to load their guns. The eldest said, "The hunting ground is still far away!" The second said, "With such a long journey, there's plenty of time to load a hundred bullets!" The third silently loaded his gun. As they walked and were about to cross the swamp, they saw a large flock of wild ducks floating densely on the water. At that moment, the third son fired and hit two ducks, while the eldest and second hastily loaded their guns, but by then, the ducks had flown away without a trace. The father said, "You two lost the prey that was within easy reach because you didn't seize the opportunity in front of you, but the third son had his gun loaded and ready!"
The young man thought to himself for a while and felt this was also reasonable.
"Belief," the wise man said again, and then told a simple yet profound story.
The father and his four sons arrived at the foot of the mountain, and the father asked them what they were doing. The eldest said, "I'm hunting!" The second said, "I'm waiting for the best prey in the world!" The third said, "I'm preparing the finest game for the dining tables of five-star hotels." Years later, the eldest was still a hunter, the second became a wealthy merchant, and the third became a senior manager!
The young man was even more astonished and didn't know which story to emulate. The wise man laughed heartily and said, "Young man, go to the top of the tower, and you'll understand."
He went to the top of the tower, and the wise man said, "Look down!" The young man mustered his courage and looked down, seeing the temple tower surrounded by four paths.
The wise man said, "My dear child, you see! There is more than one path to the temple tower, and the same goes for success! If you hit a wall on one path, try another! Remember: there are more than these four paths to success!"
The young man suddenly realized and thanked the wise man before going down the mountain.
