Why do I want to talk about four ways to generate charm? I believe charm is crucial for everyone. Children like me, so I know I have charm for them; without charm, wouldn't I be alone? If a husband lacks charm, his wife might want a divorce; if a boss lacks charm, employees might leave; if an employee lacks charm, the boss might want to fire him; if a student lacks charm, the teacher might not want to teach; if a teacher lacks charm, students might not want to attend class. Buddhism teaches four methods to generate charm, and I started from these four methods of charm. After becoming a monk, I have always used them up to now. Once after becoming a monk, I went to Mount Putuo. It was crowded with people; during the day many burned incense, but at night no one was there, so I went at night to burn incense. For whom did I burn incense? For those who had helped me. Let's not talk about the function of burning incense; when the mind arises, all dharmas arise. We use an object, through an action, to make the mind stronger. For example, if you help me pour a cup of water, my first step is just to say "Thanks"; the second step, I nod and say "Thank you very much," isn't that a bit more? The third step, I might even immediately give you a candy and say "Thank you," which is better than bowing. How does a person's destiny arise? It arises from the seed of the mind. When I burn incense (this action) represents a mind, indicating that I have moved my mind, moved to pray to the Buddha to bless them. When I was burning incense, a boss also came to burn incense. He felt that a monk like me burning incense devoutly at night must be a genuine monk, so he gave me a hundred yuan as an offering. I asked why he gave me money. He said, "You travel around; this is for your travel expenses." Hearing this made sense, so I accepted. Later, another person gave me a hundred yuan. In total, I received eight hundred yuan at Mount Putuo. I felt this was a gift from the Bodhisattva, and I wanted to give back. So I used the money to buy many prayer beads, and whoever greeted me, I gave them a string of beads. This was given to me by the Bodhisattva, and I wanted to spread it. Later, I went to pay respects to the South Sea Guanyin, where I met a group of elderly women from Sichuan. I gave them prayer beads. Seeing a monk, the elderly were very respectful and took out five or ten yuan to give me, but I didn't accept. This scene was seen by a person from the Da Bei Nong Group nearby. He came over to greet me and asked, "Master, where are you from?" I said, "Sichuan." He said, "That's far." I said, "The earth has become a village, called the global village; it's not far at all." This sentence attracted him, thinking that this monk also understood this. At that time, they had more than twenty people, and he asked me to give them a talk. I sat on a stone table, and they, a group of entrepreneurs, sat on the ground. What I talked about was the four methods of charm. After about half an hour, the tour guide came and said, "Let's go to Luojia Mountain." They said in unison, "You go; we don't need you anymore." You can see how powerful this charm is. The first of the four methods of charm is giving (dana), which is giving things to others, giving continuously, giving continuously. The method I teach salespeople is to give. All successful people are givers; all failures are takers. What to give? Give everything. If you have knowledge, give knowledge; if you have money, give money; if you have things, give things; if you have nothing, give a free smile; if you can't even smile, give praise. Did you see their smiling face? Did you see the face or the mind? The mind. Yes, the face is the appearance; the mind is the essence. Some people smile insincerely, and you see a false mind. So, see the essence through the appearance; if you can't see the essence, there's trouble. In my early years, I would stare at people. Now, I'll give you a minute to look at the other person's face, keep looking, keep looking, until you can't see the face, only a mind. You must see the essence through the appearance, not stay on the appearance forever. When I look at you, I see your mind, see your invisible mind. There is a very wise Chinese saying: "The face is born from the mind." His every smile or frown is not the face acting, but the mind. When I see you nodding, I don't actually see you nodding, but I see the mind that approves of me. If nodding means approval, then if I put a handful of rice and a chicken here, and the chicken keeps nodding, is it approving of me? Why do we fail at work? Because we are deluded by appearances. Buddhism talks about delusion; when deluded, problems arise. So, see the essence through the appearance; what exactly is the problem? Staying on the appearance will never solve the problem. I can help you generate wealth. What's the logic? It's just teaching you to see clearly the phenomenon of wealth; that's all. You might say, "If I take the class, will I become rich tomorrow?" You should know that trees grow day by day, and your child didn't grow up in a day. You studied for over ten years; if you take a one-day class, do you ask the teacher if you've become an intellectual? We say becoming rich doesn't need ten years; you don't need to study that much. Just directly enter the channel of wealth. We say what is happiness? Is it happiness to get into university? Is it happiness to get a raise? He doesn't know what happiness is. I want to create a course on a beautiful factory to help women become beautiful, because I see what beauty is. What do you say beauty is? A beautiful mind. What is a beautiful mind? It is kindness. From this, we know that anything that brings joy to others is beautiful. Even if one's appearance is unpleasant, if it brings joy, it is beautiful. If I give each person a phone, and I make everyone happy, I am beautiful. The four methods of charm: first is giving, learning to give to others. If I go to teach a class, how many people are in your class? 50. I only need to buy 50 Dove chocolates. My first action in class is to give each person a chocolate, then sing a song. The children will like me very much; even if I look strange, they will think I'm good. Many parents bring their children to me and say, "Master, please teach my child; my child doesn't study well." I don't teach the child at all; first, I give the child a red envelope and gifts. The parents say, "How can we take the master's red envelope? This consumes blessings." Hearing this, I think these are people who are confused in their Buddhist practice. If the child doesn't like me, how can I teach the child? Even bad people know to bribe before speaking; why are good people not as wise as bad people? Look at He Shen (a corrupt official) and you'll know. Some say they can't get along with their husband. Treat your husband as the emperor and yourself as a treacherous minister; what can't be handled? Watch more costume dramas, and you'll understand at once, seeing the essence through the appearance. What effect does giving produce? Giving produces a kind of karma. When we don't know each other, the scale is balanced. When I first give a thousand yuan, it breaks the balance. My giving creates a karma that makes you automatically listen to me. There was a college girl; I advised her not to accept gifts casually, as it is very dangerous. If a person keeps giving you gifts without saying anything, after giving 100 gifts, anything he says will be effective. Why? For example, an official takes bribes continuously. Later, when someone makes a request for the official to sign a document, he has to sign. The official knows it's illegal, but he is not under his own control; he is under an invisible force, which is called karma! The second of the four methods of charm is loving speech (priyavacana). Loving speech is praise; praise immediately generates charm. Some say, "No one has ever appreciated me." I see the essence through the appearance and understand at once: because you have never appreciated anyone. You mock everyone you see, look down on everyone, and finally say no one appreciates you. Actually, you have never sown the seed of appreciation. Some say, "No one ever gives me gifts." It's simple: because you have never given gifts to others. Someone told me, "Master, today I was stolen 2000 yuan." I said, "You are the thief." He said, "Why do you say I'm a thief?" How did the thief steal from you? You must have taken advantage of others or stolen something at some point. The universe's law is to restore balance. It's not the thief's doing; it's the universe's doing. The universe just sent this thief to carry out the task. See the essence through the appearance; see through and know it's not the thief's doing; see through and discover it's the universe's doing. Why does the universe do this? The universe sends people to maintain balance based on our accumulation or debts in life. For example, is it the judge who executes a person? Does the police officer treat a bad person badly? No. The bad person created bad karma himself; the police officer is just an executor. Thus, we can analyze life clearly. If someone scolds you, it's not that he thinks you're bad; it's that heaven sent him to scold you. If the principal deducts your salary, it's not that the principal is bad to you; it's that heaven sent the principal to deduct your salary. If a child's grades are poor, there must be a reason behind it. Yesterday someone told me about their child. You should realize that heaven sent a child to your home to collect a debt, because you owed people in the past. Life requires continuous giving and accumulation; only then will our lives be rich, auspicious, smooth, and happy. If life only takes, our lives will have more troubles. Praising others costs no money, and those who praise have good relationships. To become the president of Guangdehao Luggage Company, I personally went to the mall to see the actual situation. I said, "Hello, salesperson." He said with eyes closed, "Hello." I said, "How much is this?" He said, "398." You see, can this person do sales? Sales is actually simple: directly praise the customer. Who in this world doesn't do sales? If you don't sell products, you must sell yourself. How to do sales? Whether selling things or selling yourself, just give praise. For example, when someone comes to buy something, immediately say, "Hello, hello, come in, take a look." The customer looks around, picks up a bag, and is about to put it back. I take the bag and say, "Come, try it, put it on, hang it." Pose this way and that way, just praise: "Oh, you look so handsome with this bag; your face has temperament; this bag really suits you." I didn't ask you to buy; don't think I want you to buy. You don't know, I'm creating karma, not doing business. I'm creating good karma, creating merit. So, with this approach, business can't fail. At this moment, it's just letting you experience. So, in future sales, any activity, the key is to let them experience directly. This is not about the object, but about the mind. I just want you to come here, make your mind more comfortable and joyful; the rest is heaven's business. I just need to complete this karma. This karma is not performance, but the karma Buddhism talks about. When I am often this enthusiastic with you, this karma is already completed. Even if you don't buy, next time you come, won't you feel a bit uneasy if you don't buy something? That's karma at work. Remember, all methods are inseparable from the mind. When the mind arises, all dharmas arise; when the mind ceases, all dharmas cease. It's all mind. The third of the four methods of charm is beneficial action (arthacarya), which is helping others, actions that benefit others. The fourth is co-operation (samānārthatā), which is mutual respect and equality. In 2004, I was wandering at Mount Putuo. More than ten monks stayed in the same room. I alone took four or five bottles to fetch hot water and brought it back for everyone to drink. Why? I felt comfortable when they drank, because I was willing to dedicate to them. When they ate fruit and left peels on the table, I alone cleaned them up. This is beneficial action. I swept the room; this is beneficial action. The second time I went to Mount Putuo, I entered the room and saw dirty floor, dirty beds, and messy quilts. I turned over all the sheets, refolded the quilts, swept the floor again, and picked up many red envelopes, but they were all empty. I like to think in reverse. Others took the money and threw away the envelopes. I picked up the empty envelopes and put money in them. This is the thinking of the rich. The rich have a mindset of giving, turning emptiness into fullness, while the poor mindset turns fullness into emptiness. Life, in a single thought, can make you feel the uniqueness of life, because this thought is a thought of the mind. Beneficial action is helping others. When staying at Mount Putuo, I helped sweep the floor and pick up trash. I felt Mount Putuo was mine. So, wherever I go, I feel this place is related to me. When I went to Hongqiao Airport, I picked up trash, cigarette butts, and cigarette packs. In short, I tried not to pass through a place without contributing. This is beneficial action. When I went to Hong Kong Pier, I said, "I've come to Hong Kong; I have nothing to contribute, but we can pick up this trash as a gift to Hong Kong." In 2004, I visited Mount Hua. A vendor said, "Come, take some souvenirs." I said, "I'm different; I leave souvenirs rather than take them." So, I said, "Bring me a broom; I'll sweep the floor." When I went to Mount Hua for a meeting in 2012, I saw the place where I left my souvenir nine years earlier. It was still beautiful, because I had swept the floor there. How powerful are the four methods of charm! The first is giving; the second is loving speech, which is praise; the third is beneficial action, which is helping others; the fourth is co-operation, which is respecting him and doing things together with him. So, when leading children, what should we do? "Sweep the floor"—parents and teachers cannot say this to children. Instead, say, "Come, let's sweep the floor together, let's wash the dishes together." This is co-operation. Less commanding, less directing, and doing it together is co-operation, which generates charm. If you command him, you create distance, not charm. You are just using your authority to intimidate; people fear you, not respect you. When you say, "Let's sweep the floor together," and even compete to sweep more, charm is immediately generated. Where are the four methods of charm used? In my simplest view, all men pursuing women use these four methods. Haven't you summarized them? The first is giving. Did he buy you things? I see you smiling. Are you married? When your husband pursued you, didn't he keep buying you things? You nod, indicating affirmation, right? The second is constant praise, endless sweet words. So, I tell college students, if you find someone hard to pursue, just call me and I'll tell you the method. This method is neutral. It has no good or evil. Good people use it for good, bad people for evil. So, in the past, I dared not say this. The third is beneficial action. When you need something, when you're hungry or cold in winter, he immediately brings a coat. Isn't it that whatever you need, he fulfills it? Everything you see is minds moving together; it's not external. The fourth is co-operation. What is co-operation? It's spending all day together, right? Spending more time with you, walking together, shopping together, dancing together, drinking coffee together, isn't it? Co-operation, in one word, is "soak." You see how powerful this method is. So, how can a teacher fail to win over students? It's because you don't use methods. When the mind is engaged, any method can emerge. A person from the Da Bei Nong Group asked me, "We are far from home, thousands of miles away. How can I practice filial piety?" How to practice filial piety? Let's give an example on the spot. Directly buy things on Taobao, call every day, pray for parents' blessings. Very good. I believe each of you has an answer in your heart. How should I answer him? I only answer one thing: "If you had a girlfriend 2000 miles away, why don't you ask me how to have a relationship?" Why ask me how to practice filial piety? Because his mind is not strong enough. If the mind is strong, methods will come. He only has a little desire to practice filial piety, so no methods arise. When we have a strong desire to teach children well, to make students valuable people, you will have countless methods, and you will overcome all obstacles to grow. Napoleon Hill emphasized that the foundation of success is a strong desire; dreams are strong desires. What does a boyfriend use to pursue a girlfriend? The four methods of charm. In Buddhism, these are called the four means of integration (catvāri saṃgrahavastūni), where "graha" means to grasp, four methods of grasping people. Who uses these four methods? Bodhisattvas use them for sentient beings. So, bosses are bodhisattvas, employees are sentient beings; use these four methods. Teachers are bodhisattvas, students are sentient beings; use these four methods. How can you fail to grasp them? If you can't grasp others, how can you lead them? If you think this way, they won't follow your thinking. In my life, I most admire two professions: teacher and doctor. When I first started teaching, my biggest regret was not having been a teacher. If I had been a teacher, I would teach better. However, I was a Russian teacher for a month or two. After returning from learning Russian in Russia, I became the Russian teacher at our institute. I noticed that more people came to my classes than to others. You might guess it's because I'm handsome, right? No. It's because I teach in a more interesting, fun, and humorous way. So, sales is the same: eliminate those without humor. As a salesperson, if you lack humor, who wants to approach you? The teaching profession is the same. When will we suggest the Minister of Education send all teachers without humor to the moon, and keep those with humor in schools? Without humor, a person suffers daily. So, the first is to love smiling, awaken joy; people must have joy. Remember: there are three kinds of joy in our lives: the first is beauty, the second is pleasure, the third is love. Without these three, it's not the human world; it's hell. Would it be interesting to attend classes in hell? I certainly wouldn't want to teach in hell, nor attend classes there. I realized that the training industry will undergo major changes in the future; whoever leads will win. I've taken many courses and found them painful: dizzy, full of desires, bad atmosphere, bad air, terrible environment. I knew our courses would be better in the future. No child wants to study; those who say they do are lying. You must see through: everyone acts for benefit, to avoid trouble. Why do they come to school? Because if they don't, they'll be beaten; if they fail exams, they'll starve. They are driven by fear. Where is their motivation to study? They have none; they are forced. What people fundamentally want is beauty, pleasure, and love. These are the most fundamental. If our classroom has these, they will definitely come. Why do some say health classes are addictive? Because our health classes are joyful, give gifts, and are comfortable; they don't have this at home. If every teacher could turn the classroom into heaven, as we advocate, creating beauty, pleasure, and love for children, which child wouldn't want to study? They don't come for the class; they come for beauty, pleasure, and love. We need to attract them with this. Yesterday we talked about the three eternal existences of humanity: confusion, needs, and aspirations. See clearly where our confusion lies and solve it from there. Look at our students: they sit in class as if on pins and needles. How can grades be good? Actually, there's no need for tutoring; just let them relax and be joyful in class, and grades will improve immediately. The four methods of charm are very important because when teachers make the classroom charming, children are delighted.
