DSM's research found that four out of five consumers believe the craft beer trend is not a 'flash in the pan' but will continue.
"
DSM surveyed 3,300 consumers in the UK, US, Belgium, Spain, France, Italy, and the Netherlands, of which 80% said they were willing to try new beer brands, and only 4% said they would not.
The study showed that taste and sustainability play a key role in consumers' craft beer preferences—75% of respondents said taste is the main reason they buy craft beer, a more important factor than price.
**50% of respondents also claimed that they believe craft beer is more sustainable than regular beer, making craft products more attractive.**
DSM's report stated that craft beer consumption has grown by 500% over the past decade, and the survey concluded that consumers under 30 are driving the craft beer market.
**Among respondents aged 18 to 30, 45% said they drink craft beer at least once a week; meanwhile, 64% of respondents said they now drink craft beer more frequently than two years ago.**
Joana Carneiro, Beverage Director at DSM Food Specialties, believes that this consumer study shows the craft beer market has great promise—mainly because craft beer enthusiasts are highly enthusiastic.
**"However, the craze for craft beer, and the demand for unique, authentic, and premium beer varieties, presents a new reality for brewers of all sizes."**
"In this report, we speak to small brewers who want to keep up with demand while adhering to their principles, and we also address large brewers who wish to build global premium brands."
Steve Hindy, founder of the American craft beer giant Brooklyn Brewery, said at a press conference in Tokyo that 30 years ago craft beer had almost no market in the US, but now it holds a 15% market share.
Hindy said consumers have shifted from mass-produced commodities offered by large companies to niche, personalized products. **He emphasized that once people get used to hoppy, bitter craft beer, they find regular beer from large companies lacking, and they shift from regular beer consumption to craft beer.**
