Winning in Omnichannel
**Kantar Worldpanel has released its latest retail research report, "Winning in Omnichannel: Finding Growth in a Reshaped Retail Landscape."** The report points out that in 2017, 76% of the growth in the global FMCG market came from channels other than hypermarkets/supermarkets. E-commerce (+15%), discount stores (+5.2%), and cash & carry (+4.4%) were the three fastest-growing channels globally. Hypermarkets/supermarkets grew slowly at only 0.8%, but they remain the most important channel.
**Kantar Worldpanel forecasts that by 2020, these three fastest-growing channels—e-commerce, discount stores, and cash & carry—will account for 15.3% of the total market.** E-commerce will become the fastest-growing channel by 2020, benefiting from increased internet penetration in markets such as Africa and Asia, and will hold a 7.2% global market share.
Stephane Roger, Global Director of Consumer and Retail Research at Kantar Worldpanel, stated: "Last year, the global FMCG market faced severe challenges, growing only 1.9%, while global GDP grew nearly 4%. Behind the average growth rate, we see uneven growth. E-commerce and discount stores are booming, while hypermarkets and supermarkets are struggling. Consumers are sending a clear message: **they want convenience and value for money. We expect that by 2020, the market share of supermarkets and hypermarkets will decline to 48.4%. Therefore, developing successful strategies requires a better understanding of new channel dynamics and differences between countries.**"
Global FMCG Market Evolution
In 2017, the global FMCG market grew by 1.9%. Developing markets such as Africa, Latin America, and Asia grew the fastest (+8.8%, +7.3%, and +4.3%, respectively). In contrast, Western Europe grew at 2.2% (with UK inflation due to Brexit), and the US, which contributed the most to global FMCG growth, had weak growth (only +0.5%). **Slower population growth, consumers buying less or opting for private labels to reduce spending, and declining purchase frequency all led to decreased consumer demand in the US market.**
Global FMCG Market Evolution
Brands that adjust their retail strategies to align with regional channel development expectations will have a greater chance of success. E-commerce already holds a 7.3% market share in Asia and will continue to grow rapidly. In Europe, especially Eastern Europe, discount stores are developing well, holding a 27.4% share of the FMCG market. This channel is also performing well in some Latin American countries, such as Colombia (21%) and Mexico (18.8%). **In contrast, in countries like Brazil, where modern trade is still relatively underdeveloped, cash & carry is growing rapidly and currently holds a 10.6% market share.**
