# The Thinking Logic of Continuous Growth: Mainstream, Trends, Foresight, Strategy

> Rather than just learning knowledge, it's better to master a set of thinking logic that generates knowledge systems. This article explains a framework for continuous growth, emphasizing the importance of grasping the mainstream for present survival and identifying trends for future success, which requires foresight and strategic early positioning.

Preface
Rather than just learning knowledge, it's better to master a set of thinking logic that generates knowledge systems. When we learn, we should ask: where does others' knowledge come from? How can we produce similar knowledge systems? Once you master this thinking logic, you can 'produce' knowledge yourself.
1
Before training a company, I presented a set of thinking logic on how to ensure continuous growth for oneself or the company. I usually think according to this logic.
There are two core words: one is mainstream; the other is trend.
What is mainstream? Mainstream is what is currently popular, but also what is about to fade. Nothing is eternal. Those at the forefront should never believe that persisting in the same way will lead to eternity.
Should we grasp the mainstream? Of course, we must. In business, if you don't keep up with the mainstream, how can you have sales?
How to grasp the mainstream? First, do it more meticulously than others; second, execute more thoroughly than others. For mainstream things, you don't need to doubt them now; you must do them. The key is 'more'—do better and execute more thoroughly.
What is a trend? A trend is something uncertain or vague about the future. Trends are never clear at the beginning; if they are already clear, then they are about to become mainstream or already are.
If mainstream solves current problems, then trends solve future problems. If you don't grasp the mainstream, you have no present; if you don't catch up with trends, you have no future.
A boss once said: How can a company do well? Do what everyone is doing better than others; do what no one is doing earlier than others.
2
What is foresight? Foresight is discovering trends earlier than others and discovering the right trends. Because trends are vague in their early stages, discovering them earlier is crucial.
Do trends have signs? Of course they do, so grasping trends is not a gamble. Having foresight also follows a logic.
Some people make foresight sound mysterious, but it's not. How to have foresight? First, discover traces of future trends from early signs. Trends grow from small to large, from vague to clear, and there are always signs in the early stages. The key is how to discover these signs. Second, use logical reasoning. Trends must conform to the logic of social background development, so you must look from a larger context.
Therefore, when looking at trends, you must view them from a higher social background. I once summarized this logic in one sentence: View China from the world, view the industry from China, view the enterprise from the industry, and view yourself from the enterprise.
Conversely, another sentence: Jump out of yourself to see yourself, jump out of the industry to see the industry, jump out of China to see China.
In Chinese, it's: Stand high, see far.
This way of thinking is background thinking. Trends are always considered within a larger background and must conform to logic.
3
What is strategy? Strategy focuses on both the future and the present. Three sentences can summarize strategy: First, strategy is finding a position for yourself in the future. Second, strategy is viewing the present from the future. Third, the accumulation of today's work is the future strategy. That is, today's work has value not only today but also in the future—it must have dual value.
These three sentences have a core: Strategy is not about what to do in the future, but what to do today to achieve future goals. Therefore, strategy forms three interrelated elements: **layout, path, and goal.**
Layout means laying out in advance. Layout the future now. To do a good layout, you must have foresight and discover trends. The earlier you discover trends, the earlier you can lay out. For example, Uni-President's high-end product, Tang Daren, has exploded in the last two years, but the layout was done seven or eight years ago, quietly guiding, which led to the current explosion.
Why lay out in advance? Because early layout has the lowest threshold. At the same time, you can completely 'grab the mainstream while laying out for trends.' When Zhou Enlai did covert strategy work, he was good at playing 'idle chess pieces,' which is laying out in advance, making big arrangements at small cost.
Some people treat strategy as a task, but a good strategy should be that when doing today's work, you 'conveniently' do the future's work as well. This is the dual value of strategic work.
What is the path? The path is the road from the present to the future. Because future strategic goals are not achieved in the future but are the result of continuous accumulation starting today. This is strategy, and it is also the accumulation of tactics.
We talk about continuous growth, which means grasping both today and the future. The above four concepts form a set of thinking logic to achieve the goal of continuous growth.
Finally, let's string the four concepts together with a logic: Mainstream solves current survival problems. To solve future survival problems, you must grasp trends from now on. To grasp trends, you must have foresight and correctly grasp trends earlier than others. After grasping trends, you must lay out in advance, planting seeds for the future starting today. This is strategy.
