# The IP Iron Triangle: Emotional IP, Scenario IP, and Values IP

> This article discusses the evolution from brands to IPs, emphasizing the shift from materialization to personification. It introduces the concept of an 'IP Iron Triangle' comprising emotional IP, scenario IP, and values IP, and explains how these three types of IP can be combined to create a stable and successful IP strategy in the internet age.

From Commercial Brands to IP: From Materialization to Personification
Brands and IPs are both cognitive symbols of the industrial era. Brands apply to mass products and are materialized; IPs apply to animation and entertainment industries and are personified, or simply are people.
It can be said that in the industrial era, brands were mainstream with broader applicability, while IPs were niche. However, in the internet self-media era, IPs have gradually become mainstream, and brands have become niche. Why this reversal?
In the industrial era, IPs were value symbols with soul, but in the internet self-media era, their connotation has mutated. It is necessary to trace back what IP truly is.
The difference between brands and IPs is that a brand is a promise, while an IP is a set of values.
1\. The core of a brand is 'promise'
A brand is a credible promise to consumers about a specific category, quality, experience, or identity. It answers 'Who am I?' (identity) and 'What can I provide for you?' (functional/emotional benefits).
Structurally, the core of a brand is a commitment to a 'trust contract.' It is built on consistency: consistent product quality, consistent visual symbols, and consistent service experience. For example, BMW promises 'driving pleasure,' and Volvo promises 'safety.'
Brand value is directly attached to specific products or services. Consumers' affection for BMW ultimately translates into a desire to purchase a BMW car.
2\. The core of an IP is 'worldview'
An IP is a 'soul system' with an independent personality, background story, and values, constructing a meaningful universe that can exist independently of its original carrier. It answers 'Why is the world like this?' and 'What is important?'
Structurally, the core of an IP is 'narrative gravity.' It is built on rich stories, character relationships, conflict rules, and visual symbols. For example, the Marvel universe has a complete historical view (Infinity Stones), moral view (heroic responsibility), and character network.
IP value is attached to the 'soul' itself and the universal emotions and values it carries. Consumers' affection for Iron Man can extend to figurines, games, and clothing, with no necessary connection to the 'automobile' category.
As intellectual property, IP can be licensed across boundaries precisely because it transcends the universal emotions and values of the product itself.
3\. From materialization to personification
Injecting emotion into a brand is the materialization of emotion and also the alienation of emotion. IP creates a virtual person or animal, endows it with a complete plot, and personifies it. This is where IP outshines brands.
The internet era has entered virtual space, which I call virtualization. In terms of cognition, it leverages the personification of IP and gradually moves away from materialized brand cognition. This is the right direction.
4\. Why can IP cross boundaries?
In the traditional era, brands established 'promise' cognition through slogans, logos, and repeated exposure. For example, Nike promises 'inspiration and victory' through 'Just Do It' and athlete imagery. But its story serves marketing.
In the traditional era, the story of an IP was itself the product. Mickey Mouse first displayed his mischievous, kind personality and adventure stories in animated shorts; Sun Wukong completed his full character arc from rebellion to enlightenment in 'Journey to the West.' Consumers first fell in love with this 'soul' and its world, and then accepted its derivatives out of love for it.
The basis for cross-boundary licensing is precisely that the value of an IP is independent of a single carrier (animated film or novel), and its 'soul' (character traits, relationships, values) can be seamlessly injected into new media and product forms. A cup printed with Mickey Mouse sells not just the container function, but the experience of 'possessing the joy that Mickey represents.' A cup printed with an 'XX brand' logo sells the brand's identity recognition or quality promise.
**Scenario 'Iron Triangle'**
**Emotional IP, Scenario IP, Values IP**
Word-of-mouth was the cognitive symbol of the agricultural era. In the industrial era, word-of-mouth became marginalized.
Brands are cognitive symbols formed by mass media in the industrial era. In the self-media era, brands will also become marginalized. Many companies have already disbanded their brand departments, and even if not, spending money on communication has become quite difficult.
Introducing IP into internet communication is a stroke of genius because IP has soul value.
However, current IP communication has become vulgar. Because emotional IP has occupied the IP space. And emotional IP precisely lacks two basic characteristics of traditional IP: first, soul value; second, cross-boundary cognition. It borrows the name of IP but not the soul of IP.
So, we need to redefine IP. If a brand is a promise, then IP is a value co-created by manufacturers and users. Because IP is the result of users participating in initiating content dissemination and content fission. However, internet communication is different from traditional IP narrative logic, and currently, three types of IP have formed. The combination of these three types forms an IP structure. Using the IP structure to explain the current IP phenomenon makes sense.
Since you can't conquer the world with a single IP, use an IP structure to conquer the world.
Based on my observation and practice, IP can be divided into three categories: emotional IP, scenario IP, and values IP. This forms the IP Iron Triangle.
They correspond respectively to shallow emotional value, commercial word-of-mouth management, and deep emotional value. The three types of IP correspond to emotional appeal, commercial word-of-mouth, and value recognition. Starting with emotion, commercializing word-of-mouth, and ending with value. The combination of the three, with cognition progressing from shallow to deep, is the perfect IP in the real world.
1\. Emotional IP: Reflection of emotional value, explosive breakthrough
Emotional IP is driven by 'resonance in the moment.' It relies on strong social emotions (such as nostalgia, passion, criticism, carnival, anxiety) to ignite, and rapidly spreads through UGC (user-generated content).
The advantage of emotional IP is extremely fast startup speed, astonishing explosive power with algorithmic traffic support, quickly forming hot topics, and relatively low barriers. Who wouldn't want to catch the wave of massive traffic? Especially startups, which often bet on emotional value breakthroughs.
The risk of emotional IP is 'quick birth, quick death.' Emotions are changeable and prone to fatigue, lacking sustained support. Most internet memes, suddenly famous amateurs, and influencers relying on a single emotional topic die as soon as they become popular.
2\. Values IP: Reflection of emotional value, the lighthouse of enterprises
Values IP is driven by 'lasting beliefs.' It represents a set of distinct, attractive ideas, philosophies, or ideals. Examples include Huawei's 'striving and transcendence,' Tesla's 'accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy,' and Steve Jobs' 'changing the world.'
The advantage of values IP is strong long-term sustainability and extremely high barriers. It can build deep trust and emotional attachment; users are 'believers' rather than 'fans,' and it has strong cross-cycle capabilities.
The risk of values IP is that the construction cycle is extremely long, requiring founders or core figures to 'live it out' for decades, and balancing with commercialization requires high wisdom. Only when OGC content accumulates to a certain density does values IP take shape.
IPs in animation and drama are inherently personified. The current emphasis on IP personification mainly applies to values IP.
3\. Scenario IP: Reflection of commercial word-of-mouth management, commercial success
Scenario IP is driven by lifestyle solutions. It is strongly bound to specific scenarios, providing a complete functional or emotional experience. Therefore, UGC-driven scenario IP is the word-of-mouth of the internet era. Word-of-mouth in the agricultural era was reflected in products; in the internet era, it is reflected in scenarios. It is the product of the effective combination of user spontaneous dissemination and commercial word-of-mouth management.
The advantage of scenario IP is the clearest commercialization path and strong scalability. It is easy to productize, servitize, and spatialize, and can be directly embedded into consumption processes.
The problem with scenario IP is that it can easily become a 'shell.' If it lacks unique emotional touchpoints or a values soul, it faces severe homogenization competition and limited user loyalty.
The Ascension Path of the IP 'Iron Triangle'
It is difficult for a company to make efforts in all three categories simultaneously; often it breaks through in one aspect and then gradually forms the IP Iron Triangle.
The Iron Triangle is named for the stability of a triangle; a single-dimensional IP has poor stability. Therefore, no matter which type of IP you start with, you must gradually move toward the 'Iron Triangle.'
1\. Starting with emotional IP
This is the most common starting point, especially for startups. But to avoid quick death, you must think: Can the ignited emotion settle into a lasting value? Or can this traffic be channeled into a specific, repeatable consumption scenario?
Generally, after emotional IP ignites, online traffic is huge, creating an illusion of 'eternal' and 'infinite' traffic, leading to intoxication with traffic, and even increasing traffic (ad spending) when traffic declines.
My suggested ascension path is: emotional IP → scenario IP → values IP.
From emotional IP to scenario IP, first understand that when online C-end traffic declines, who has stable traffic? The answer is offline B-end. When online traffic is huge, you should directly reach the B-end offline, especially in B-C integrated consumption scenarios, turning emotional IP into relatively stable scenario IP. Because values IP is the result of long-term accumulation, it can start accumulating during the emotional IP explosion phase, but it is difficult to form in the short term.
Emotional IP is sudden. When most companies encounter an emotional IP explosion, they either respond instinctively, eager to monetize, or believe in the sustainability of emotional IP. At this time, bosses generally lack IP ascension awareness, and only wake up when traffic declines, but it's too late. This is why most internet celebrities and IPs die quickly after birth.
A good example of combining emotional IP with values IP is Huawei's Ren Zhengfei and Yu Chengdong, who echo each other and each get what they need. Whenever Yu Chengdong's performance goes a bit too far, Ren Zhengfei pulls it back with the team's values.
2\. Starting with values IP
This is the most solid but also the most difficult starting point. Compared to the many cases of emotional IP, there are relatively few cases of values IP initiation. It requires conveying abstract values to the public through specific stories, events (emotional expression), and products and spaces (scenario-based implementation). Steve Jobs conveyed the 'Think Different' values through product launches (creating anticipation and carnival emotions) and Apple Stores (scenarios of ultimate experience).
It is rare for an ordinary person to suddenly possess the value of values IP. Usually, it is a sudden event that reveals a person's shining point.
At this time, it is not ascension but descent. Generally, values IP avoids descending into emotional IP, but the original business can be transformed into scenario IP.
3\. Starting with scenario IP
This is the natural starting point for business. But to stand out, you need to simultaneously deploy emotional IP and values IP.
Extending scenario IP to emotional IP should fully utilize the favorable condition that 'scenarios naturally include emotions.' When emotional IP accumulates to a certain density, the platform will inject more traffic into the traffic pool. Inject unique emotional charm and underlying value propositions into the scenario. Behind Muji's scenario (simple home furnishings) is the philosophy of 'this is enough' (values), bringing users a calm and comfortable emotional experience.
The 'Iron Triangle' and Communication Subjects
Unlike the mass media of the industrial era, the content communication subjects of internet self-media are diversified, including UGC (user-generated content), PGC (professional-generated content), BGC (brand-generated content), OGC (occupational-generated content), and AIGC (AI-generated content).
The content of emotional IP comes from UGC and PUGC. UGC can be divided into 'connected users' and 'non-connected users.'
UGC created by non-connected users is uncontrollable. But the fission of UGC often comes from non-connected users. This is the magic of UGC fission. It repeatedly creates miracles, but miracles are hard to replicate.
Connected users are mainly used to create content for scenario IP. Because they are connected, users are 'semi-controllable.' The scale of connected users can be large. Once the appropriate tone of UGC is found, connected users can be quickly mobilized.
PGC content was previously the main source of brand communication content. But in the self-media era, it is gradually becoming useless, especially for emotional IP. However, it is still valuable for scenario IP.
Scenario IP must face both 2B and 2C. UGC, PGC, PUGC, and OGC are all useful, and their communication power can be superimposed.
The communication subject of values IP is mainly OGC, similar to public relations communication. Since it is values IP, it should involve less emotion, scenario, and other commercial elements. Although values IP also has commercial value, it is not suitable for direct commercial use.
