The challenging and dynamic nature of marketing, along with the high demand for marketing talent across industries, attracts many newcomers. New marketers often ask me, "Mr. Chen, I'm new to the industry. Where should I start?" Everyone has a starting point, and confusion at the beginning is only natural. Based on my understanding of marketing, I'd like to share a few thoughts for discussion with peers.

**1. Understand the Industry You're In**

Each industry has its own characteristics and unique marketing models. Industry trends and directions often determine corporate behavior. No company can operate independently of its external environment. A deep understanding of your industry allows you to not only know what your company's marketing strategy is, but also why it is that way. Understanding the industry helps you develop market insight and adaptability, and it cultivates your ability to grasp the big picture. Newcomers often feel at a loss because they lack the ability to anticipate problems and respond quickly. This is not only a reflection of inexperience but also a lack of knowledge.

So, what aspects of the industry should you understand? How can you improve your knowledge base?

1. **Learn relevant national laws and regulations.** Understand the operational norms that the industry must follow. These include product standards, quality safety laws, advertising regulations, and consumer protection laws formulated by national functional departments. Government regulations are the foundation of corporate behavior. Understanding these sets the bottom line for your actions: companies must operate legally. Any non-standard means must not cross the boundaries of national laws and regulations; otherwise, you'll suffer the consequences.

2. **Recognize the trends and changes in industry development.** The widespread use of new technologies, the emergence of new media, shifts in consumer trends, major world events, and sudden natural disasters can all affect industry dynamics. Changes within the industry directly impact a company's operations and marketing models. Companies develop by adapting to trends and seizing opportunities. Understanding industry trends helps you keep pace with your company's development and guide your clients in a timely manner.

3. **Know your competitors.** Learn as much as possible about your competitors' product features, pricing systems, competitive strategies, sales conditions, and customer distribution. As the saying goes, "Know yourself and know your enemy, and you'll never be defeated." The deeper your understanding of competitors, the more targeted and responsive your marketing efforts will be.

4. **Understand the basic marketing operational models of the industry.** Marketing models include market operation models, management models, and product promotion methods. Each industry has its own marketing model, shaped by market trials and errors, forming its unique characteristics. Approaching industry marketing models with a critical mindset will foster your creativity.

**2. Build Your Network**

The biggest challenge for newcomers is the lack of a network. Building your network allows you to thrive in the industry. How do you build your network?

1. **Enhance your personal charisma.** Personal charisma comes from your knowledge, personal cultivation, and way of dealing with people. It often manifests in the details of work and life. Details determine character, and character determines destiny. Everyone needs a process of self-improvement.

2. **Cultivate diverse interests and hobbies.** As the saying goes, "Birds of a feather flock together." Shared interests make others see you as a kindred spirit. In negotiations with clients, if you share a hobby, it can increase your chances of success.

3. **Exchange with peers.** If there's no fundamental conflict of interest, exchanging information and customer resources with peers can directly enhance your network.

4. **Collect from multiple channels.** In today's society, information channels are diverse. Pay attention to collecting from various sources in daily life, such as gatherings, the internet, media, and even during travel. Marketers should be observant.

5. **Increase your value to others.** We live in a commodity era where personal interests play a significant role. If you want help from others, you must first help them. Being able to help others makes it easier to receive help in return. This is a simple truth.

**3. Master Operational Processes**

Every industry's marketing work has standardized operational processes. Rigorous work reduces errors. Newcomers should avoid being overly eager for quick success. In each marketing task, plan every step carefully and prepare for various difficulties. A good beginning is half the battle. When mastering processes, pay attention to the following:

1. Marketing is often a process of constraint and counter-constraint. The key to controlling the process is grasping the essential points of each work segment. Prepare for the worst and strive for the best.

2. Start with the simplest tasks when dealing with complex ones. Marketers should learn to simplify complexity. Break each process into steps and progress step by step toward your goal.

3. Understand the operational process comprehensively. A company's marketing operational process is developed through market testing and refinement. It aims to protect the company's interests and eliminate management loopholes. Understanding the process helps you fully appreciate your responsibilities.

**4. Understand Corporate Culture**

Corporate culture encompasses a company's management style, business philosophy, values, and future development goals. Understanding corporate culture helps you integrate into your environment. Each person is an individual but must conform to the group. The company you serve is the stage where you realize your value. If you can't find space for development within the company, it's hard to achieve self-worth. Understanding corporate culture should include the following:

1. **Corporate values.** Corporate values are the company's self-positioning and evaluation criteria. They include social values and employee values. Social values reflect the company's contribution to society, while employee values reflect the company's talent standards. Understanding corporate values helps you assess whether you are the talent the company needs.

2. **Corporate personality.** Corporate personality stems from the company's management style and the characteristics of its key managers, as well as the local customs and practices of the company's location. Understanding corporate personality helps you truly grasp the company's unique traits. What exists is reasonable. Newcomers must first adapt to the environment.

3. **Development vision.** The development vision refers to the company's future goals, blueprint, and dreams. Goals are the driving force for development and the shared dream of all employees. Only by aligning personal development with the company's development can employees have a broad future. Understanding the development vision helps you set your own life goals.

**5. Improve Your Marketing Skills**

Marketing skills come from expanding knowledge and accumulating work experience. Marketers' skills include market insight, judgment, adaptability, innovation, communication, and expression. These are detailed in my work "Ten Practices for Salespeople." I won't elaborate here.

Entering a new industry is a process of starting from scratch. The key is to maintain the right mindset, learn from the basics, and build from the ground up. Only through effort can you reap rewards. Experienced marketers uphold the motto: "No pains, no gains."
