China Resources Seeks Breakthrough in Overseas Food Categories
According to China Resources Group's official website, amid the trend of consumption transformation and upgrading, China Resources Enterprise ("CRE") has actively explored and promoted the combination of overseas "good products" with China Resources' "good channels" over the past two to three years, completing minority equity investments in three New Zealand companies, including honey producer Comvita, apple producer Scales, and King Salmon producer New Zealand King Salmon, to assist them in entering the Chinese market.
CRE also established a joint venture with Sovena, the world's largest olive oil exporter, to jointly formulate business plans and orderly expand market development. Based on preliminary work, CRE is conducting further research and analysis on major categories such as fruits, seafood, and beef, seeking investment breakthrough points in these categories.
In terms of target selection, starting from Chinese consumer demand, CRE adheres to the "good product" principle. CRE has preliminarily defined screening criteria for "good product" companies: in regional selection, dividing into Europe, America, and Australia-New Zealand, focusing on mature markets with stable political and economic environments, standardized legal systems, mature capital markets, and friendly attitudes toward China; in category selection, starting from Chinese market demand, prioritizing categories that are mid-to-high-end both overseas and in China, or categories with resource endowments overseas and mid-to-high-end in China; in company selection, establishing a balanced scorecard evaluation system and forming a database of overseas target companies.
In terms of business model, it is driven by "minority equity investment + trade services." By making minority equity investments in target companies and using trade service models to expand the Chinese market, the ultimate goal is to achieve mutual promotion and reinforcement between equity investment and the introduction of "good products."
