# How Master Kong Built Instant Retail Around Consumption Occasions

> Master Kong treated instant retail as an operating ecosystem rather than another sales account, aligning product innovation, thirty-minute fulfillment, late-night demand, travel, campuses, content, and platform data.

Instant retail in China is moving from emergency purchase toward an everyday shopping behavior. For convenience foods, the format has a natural fit: demand is immediate, products are standardized, and nearby fulfillment can compete directly with meal delivery in selected occasions.

Master Kong expanded into snack chains, warehouse clubs, and instant retail, and its instant-noodle business received Meituan Flash Buy's top brand award in 2025. The company reported leading category scale on the platform from January through August.

The useful lesson is not the award. It is how the brand connected channel, product, operations, supply, and occasion.

## Instant Retail Requires More Than Product Availability

A brand can list ordinary products in a rapid-delivery warehouse without changing how consumers perceive or use them. Master Kong instead focused on specific demand windows, including late-night meals, travel, campus life, lunch, and dinner.

The company said its Meituan transaction users and sales value led the category during the period covered by the article. Late-night demand represented a larger share than the category average, while scenario-based campaigns generated more than 1.2 billion impressions.

The operating logic connected three layers:

1. Use consumer and platform data to identify an occasion.
2. Build product and communication around that occasion.
3. Use nearby inventory and thirty-minute delivery to convert intent immediately.

## Create a Product for the Channel

Master Kong introduced a product called Hemian as a more complete meal solution with meat, vegetables, soup, and wide noodles. It launched first through instant-retail warehouses and targeted lunch and dinner rather than only the traditional snack or emergency occasion.

The company emphasized wheat sourcing, noodle texture, larger meat and vegetable components, broth, and a four-minute preparation time. These are brand claims, but they reveal the product-design objective: reduce the perceived compromise associated with instant food.

The launch used Meituan livestreaming to demonstrate the meal and strengthen its positioning relative to delivered food.

Starting with the channel also helped align inventory, target users, and communication from the beginning. Instant retail was not an afterthought added to a product designed for a supermarket shelf.

## Travel: Shorten the Path From Discovery to Delivery

During the May holiday period, Master Kong and Meituan Flash Buy created a light-packing travel program. Xiaohongshu content introduced the idea, while links moved users directly into Meituan for fulfillment.

The company reported that 30% of users entering the platform through the campaign were new customers.

The campaign worked because travel creates a specific convenience problem. Consumers may not want to carry food, but they still want reliable access at their destination. Nearby delivery solves the need more directly than a general brand message.

## Campuses: Use the Calendar and Local Presence

Master Kong worked with Meituan around examination and back-to-school periods. Product names were paired with encouraging phrases, and the brand activated 45 universities through roadshows and sampling at parcel lockers.

The program combined national creative with a highly local distribution environment. Students could encounter the message, receive a sample, and order through a familiar platform within the same campus ecosystem.

## Late Night: Build a Repeatable Occasion Property

The brand also created a late-night noodle-shop concept with Meituan, covering prominent locations in 179 cities, including night markets, campuses, and music festivals.

Instead of treating every activation as an independent event, the combined late-night meal and noodle-shop idea could be repeated across cities and cultural settings.

This made the product part of young consumers' nighttime routines while the platform supplied traffic, availability, and rapid fulfillment.

## From Joining a Channel to Integrating an Ecosystem

Instant retail is not simply faster e-commerce. It changes which products are available nearby, how inventory is distributed, when consumers decide, and how quickly marketing can become a transaction.

Master Kong's approach moved from selling a product to operating an occasion, and from opening an account to integrating with a platform ecosystem.

Traditional brands can apply the same sequence:

- identify a demand moment with platform and consumer data;
- develop the appropriate product or pack;
- place inventory close enough to meet the promise;
- create content that makes the occasion recognizable;
- link discovery directly to purchase;
- measure new users, repeat behavior, margin, and sell-through.

The channel creates growth only when product, supply, content, and fulfillment are designed as one system.
