# Five Principles for Salespeople to Learn to Speak

> Many people fail or are not successful enough because they don't know how to speak. For salespeople, speaking is even more important. Seeing this title, many people will disdainfully think: Come on, who needs to learn how to speak? But in real life, many people's failures and lack of success are caused by not knowing how to speak. When we talk about a successful person, we sometimes exclaim: That guy really knows how to talk; people all like him. It's clear that speaking is very important for everyone, and even more so for salespeople. I've found that many salespeople, during business discussions with clients, don't know how to speak well, which causes client aversion without the salesperson even realizing it, and as a result, they are quickly dismissed by the client. Speaking is an important tool for communicating with clients, and we need to learn and pay attention to the outcomes of communication. Below, I'll share my views on some basic principles.

**1. Learn to narrate concisely and to the point.**

When meeting with a client, whether introducing yourself or the product, be concise, ideally within two sentences. For example: "I am Huang Yong, General Manager of Zhuhai Liwanwu Trading Co., Ltd. I know you're interested in our electronic moisture-proof cabinet series, so I've come to visit and hear your opinions." Note that in Liwanwu (company name), Huang Yong (your name), and electronic moisture-proof cabinet (product name) should be emphasized. This should prompt the other party to ask questions. Speak slowly and without dragging. Always look the other person in the eyes and smile when speaking.

**2. When the other party is speaking, do not interrupt casually; also, do not casually refute their views. Be sure to understand their intention before speaking.**

Many of our salespeople often interrupt or refute before the other party finishes speaking or before understanding their viewpoint, turning the conversation into a TV debate, which greatly annoys the client, and naturally the order is not secured. As a salesperson, always remember your task is to sell the product. Sometimes a client's belittling of your product is a habitual venting; you just need to listen attentively, show understanding from time to time, and ultimately win the client's goodwill, making it easier to discuss the order later.

**3. Answer the other party's questions seriously.**

For things you are very clear about, give affirmative answers. For things you are not clear about, frankly tell the client, "I'll note this question and get back to you after I find out." Never pretend to know when you don't, and never give vague answers. Also, avoid saying nonsense to dodge the client's questions. When answering, be careful not to make absolute statements, such as "Our quality is absolutely no problem" or "Our service is absolutely first-class." We all know the common sense: nothing in the world is absolute. Don't make your language absolute.

**4. Try not to use a rhetorical tone when discussing business with clients.**

Some of our salespeople, when facing malicious questions from clients, respond in kind, wanting to fire off a series of rhetorical questions to defeat the client. But this backfires: the client is defeated, and the order is lost. Instead, smile and say, "I fully understand your opinion. Could you let me explain further? I'm sure it will satisfy you." We cannot become irrational just because the client is irrational.

**5. Learn to praise your clients.**

For your client's reasonable requests and professional knowledge, praise them from the heart. For example: "You are really professional; I hope to learn from you in the future. Please continue to give me your guidance." People who know how to praise others are more likely to succeed.

The above five points are my long-term experience in sales work, and also my summary of how to speak in dealing with people. If salespeople learn to speak, their performance will continue to improve.
