**Top 10 Female-Favorite Snacks of 2017**

1. According to the "Food with Quality - 2017 China Snack Food Consumption Report" jointly released by JD.com Supermarket and Tangyan Yanjiu magazine, the top 10 female-favorite single items in 2017 are:

**Three Squirrels Pecans**
Three Squirrels' pecans are marketed as "the chocolate of nuts," with concepts like "delicious because of origin, delicious because of choice, delicious because of freshness," and they also engage consumers with "delicious because we are friends." Successful IP integration has boosted Three Squirrels' popularity, winning over many consumers.
Snack enthusiasts found that Three Squirrels pecans (225g per bag) are priced at 22.9 yuan on JD.com, with cumulative reviews exceeding 680,000, reflecting the brand's strong market presence.

**Richeese Wafer**
In 2014, Indonesian snack Richeese Nabati Cheese Wafer (hereafter "Richeese") began appearing on major Chinese e-commerce platforms, but didn't take off initially. In 2015, it gained widespread consumer traction online, becoming a new e-commerce snack hit.
Now, with high cost-performance, novel flavors, and distinctive packaging, Richeese has gradually won Chinese consumers, with sales rising rapidly both online and offline. On JD.com's self-operated flagship store, the wafer has received over 100,000 reviews.

**Haoxiangni Jujube-Walnut**
Haoxiangni, originally a jujube-focused company, innovated with the consumption upgrade by creating a new way to eat nuts: jujube-wrapped walnuts. This product quickly gained consumer favor. The whole walnut kernel is wrapped in red dates, saving snackers from shelling walnuts and offering double flavor in one bite. With a 97% positive rating on JD.com, it's a testament to its quality.

**Wolong Daily Nuts**
Wolong is one of the early domestic companies in mixed nuts and has popularized the concept of daily nuts. On JD.com's Wolong official flagship store, daily nuts offer trial tasting, and customers can return if unsatisfied. Both product quality and this customer-friendly sales approach have earned it a 98% positive rating.

**Baicaowei Macadamia Nuts**
Macadamia nuts, also in the nut category, have gained popularity since launch. Baicaowei enlisted young idol Yang Yang as its spokesperson, quickly winning over many consumers, especially since most of Yang Yang's fans are female. Data from Baicaowei's JD.com self-operated flagship store shows that the cream-flavored macadamia nuts (200g per bag) have nearly 300,000 reviews.
Baicaowei defines its macadamia nuts as "a macadamia nut's self-cultivation, milky aroma + macadamia nut = heart's desire." They further define "heart's desire" as "from a prestigious origin, each one selected, plump and round, smooth and crunchy, with rich milky flavor. Of course, it's not just delicious but also good-looking, making eating perfect." Who can resist such blatant temptation?

**Nestlé Crispy Shark Sandwich Cookies**
Nestlé Crispy Shark cookies offer multiple flavors, providing convenience for consumers. They are an ideal office snack. On Nestlé's JD.com self-operated flagship store, Crispy Shark has received over 210,000 reviews with a 99% positive rating.

**Want Want Senbei**
Want Want Senbei comes in various package sizes, allowing consumers to choose according to preference. Additionally, Senbei offers Mexican chili flavor, cheese senbei, and Senbei Monogatari to cater to different tastes. The individually wrapped packaging is moisture-proof and easy to carry.

**Lay's Stax Potato Chips**
Lay's Stax comes in up to 11 flavors, packaged in cans, with some flavors also available in bags. As a long-standing yet innovative potato brand, Lay's has been in China since 1993, continuously innovating in localizing flavors and playing a significant role in the snack market. It has won "Superbrands China's Favorite Brand" for two consecutive years, becoming the most popular savory snack among Chinese consumers.

**Oreo Cookies**
For Oreo, everyone knows the classic slogan: "Twist, lick, dunk." In 1996, Oreo crossed the ocean to China, and the brand has kept innovating. According to Oreo's official website, by 2000, 362 billion Oreo cookies had been sold globally. If lined up, they could make six round trips from Earth to the Moon. 50% of Oreo eaters twist it open before eating, and women are more likely to do so than men.

**Orion Chips**
Orion's Chips come in 104g boxes. Unlike fried snacks like Lay's Stax, Chips is a non-fried, zero-trans-fat puffed snack. Additionally, Chips offers various eating methods and consumption scenarios for consumers.

**China's Convenience Food Industry Recovers, Showing Overall Warming Trend**

2. Today (September 15), the 17th China Convenience Food Conference and Exhibition was held in Beijing. Themed "Innovation and Transformation," the conference discussed the healthy transformation of convenience food and the enhancement of the industry value chain. Leaders from leading companies such as Master Kong, Uni-President, Jinmailang, Sanquan, Synear, General Mills, Anjoy, Kemen Noodle, Nissin, Sinar Mas, and CP Group attended and actively participated in industry reports and exchanges.

2017 marks the 25th year since China's convenience food industry formed its industrial scale, and it's a critical point for bottoming out and recovering after five consecutive years of decline.

Meng Suhe, President of the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology, stated at the conference that by the end of 2016, with instant noodles, frozen prepared foods, and flour-based products as the main sectors, the industry had 1,802 enterprises above designated size, with output value of 391.51 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.55%, nearly one percentage point lower than the national food industry growth. Entering 2017, the industry shows an overall warming trend.

Meng noted that instant noodle volume slightly decreased, but innovation is active across the industry. While stabilizing the market, after four years of accumulation, the industry has begun to extend toward premiumization and diversification. Companies are in a strategic adjustment period, and the industry is recovering.

According to the Noodle Products Branch of the Chinese Institute of Food Science and Technology, in 2016, major instant noodle manufacturers produced 36.24 billion packs, flat compared to 36.25 billion packs the previous year. Sales reached 51.169 billion yuan, a 4% increase from 49.091 billion yuan the previous year. Entering 2017, the industry shows an upward trend, developing steadily but with difficulty.

Leading companies are gradually emerging from the "pain period." Master Kong has rebounded, while Uni-President, Jinmailang, and Baixiang have stable performance. The instant noodle industry's "landscape remains unchanged."

**Young People Choose Drinks by Looks: Blue Wine Appears**

3. When "good for photos" becomes a criterion for food, taste seems less important.

Fashion trends are now hitting the food industry. After rosé and sparkling wines became popular among young people for their good looks, blue wine has quietly appeared.

A Spanish winery called Gik recently launched this wine with a color as fantastical as the Smurfs. None of the founders have traditional winemaking experience—they just wanted to do something special. So this group with quirky ideas collaborated with several university chemistry professors to develop blue wine without artificial pigments. The blue color comes from plant extracts like anthocyanins from grape skins and indigo carmine.

This electric blue wine sold 80,000 bottles shortly after its European launch in early summer. Despite good sales among young people, it has faced controversy in Spain. Earlier this year, Gik was fined 3,000 euros by the Spanish government because "blue is not a color allowed for wine by law." As a result, Gik had to change its label to "99% wine and 1% grape ingredients" and can no longer market it as wine.

Traditional winemakers feel Gik disrespects the industry. "This invention is terrible. If you're so innovative, go develop an app and stop ruining our wine industry," someone told the Gik team.

However, Gik is confident about the U.S. market.

On one hand, U.S. regulations on wine are relatively lenient. Gik, which must be sold as "other alcoholic beverage" in Spain, can be legitimately sold as blue wine in the U.S. On the other hand, American young people are drawn to visually appealing (Instagramable) drinks, like the Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino and various pink cocktails that became internet sensations this year—blue wine sounds like it would easily capture curiosity. They will officially launch in cities like Miami and Boston at the end of September, with potential expansion to New York, California, and Washington. The retail price is $16.

As for taste—don't expect it to taste like traditional wine. Founder Artiz Lopez said they conducted a blind test where only 1 out of 15 people thought it was wine; the rest thought it was just a sweet soft drink.

**Coffee-Flavored Coca-Cola Appears in Japan: Double the Excitement?**

4. A cold cola in summer is refreshing, but to enhance the energy-boosting effect, Coca-Cola launched a coffee-flavored cola in Japan this month.

This coffee cola, with 50% more caffeine than regular cola, is named Coca-Cola Coffee Plus and is now available in Japanese vending machines (currently the only sales channel). It sits among other diverse beverages, priced at 130 yen (about 7.7 yuan), slightly more expensive than typical small canned carbonated drinks but within the range of canned coffee.

Some have already tried the new cola and described that it smells more like coffee. If you close your eyes and cover your ears (to avoid the fizzing sound of carbonation), you might think it's pure coffee.

**Yili Accused of Withholding Payments, Leading to Dealer's Suicide Attempt and Disability**

5. Xia Lisong, a former Yili milk dealer in Tancheng County, Shandong Province, recently wrote to higher authorities, claiming that Inner Mongolia Yili Group owes him over 10 million yuan in advance payments for years. His wife attempted suicide due to the stress and is now permanently disabled. He urges relevant authorities to intervene and compel Yili to fulfill its contract and promises to protect his legal rights.

In two complaint documents titled "Detailed Account of Fees Owed by Inner Mongolia Yili Group" and "Yili Dealer in Tancheng County, Shandong Forced to Attempt Suicide," Xia Lisong described the events: "My name is Xia Lisong, male, born August 1976, Han ethnicity, bachelor's degree, from Tancheng County, Shandong. I am the owner of Jincheng Store in Tancheng County. In 2007, we signed a 'Sales Contract' with Yili Group's Liquid Milk Division to become the dealer for Yili liquid milk in Tancheng County, Shandong. This lasted over 8 years until January 2015."

From 2007 to 2015, we sold milk for Yili totaling 146 million yuan, including 1.62 million boxes of boxed pure milk, 1.21 million boxes of boxed yogurt, and 210,000 boxes of Jindian Shuhua milk. Other items were negligible. During this period, Yili supplied us at high prices, but the high purchase price (CIF) required selling at low market prices. Therefore, Yili instructed us to wholesale at low prices to distributors. For example, pure milk: Yili's supply price was 58 yuan per box, and we were to wholesale at 50 yuan per box. This resulted in us directly advancing 17.033 million yuan for Yili (negative price difference), plus 6.352 million yuan for vehicles, personnel, and warehousing, totaling 23.385 million yuan over eight years. Yili gave us 7.16 million yuan in free goods and 6.14 million yuan in subsidies over these eight years, leaving a final debt of 10.085 million yuan. Yili promised to resolve it, but after more than two years of delays, we were bankrupt and heavily in debt. We borrowed 4 million yuan and couldn't repay, leading to a lawsuit. The case is now in execution phase, and the creditor is demanding enforcement.

After more than two years of difficult debt collection, my wife was under immense pressure. On August 21 at 1:46 PM, she jumped from the seventh floor of a shopping mall in Gongzhufen, Beijing, resulting in permanent disability. Even now, Yili Group has not directly addressed the issue.

Currently, dealers from Hebi, Henan, and Taizhou, Jiangsu, have similar experiences and are also waiting in Beijing for Yili to resolve the issue. "In business, integrity is fundamental. I urge higher authorities to pay attention and compel Yili to fulfill its contract and promises to protect our legal rights as dealers," said Xia Lisong, former Yili milk dealer in Tancheng County, Shandong.

**Pagoda Enters Unmanned Retail, Plans 6,000 Points in Six Months**

6. On September 15, Pagoda, together with Qizhi Kaola, Haopin, and Lingwa, launched the "Big Pagoda Alliance" to expand fresh food unmanned retail, with plans to deploy 6,000 points in the next six months.

As a leading fruit specialty chain in China, Pagoda has over 15 years of experience in fruit cultivation, supply chain, cold chain logistics, and fruit operations. With over 2,600 stores nationwide and warehousing and distribution centers covering 41 cities, Pagoda provides high-quality fruit supply services to 180 million people annually.

Fresh food is a tough challenge for e-commerce, and even more so for unmanned retail. Currently, most players in fresh food already have fresh supply chains. Building a supply chain solely for unmanned retail is unrealistic. Leveraging mature third-party partnerships, especially with a full fruit industry chain company like Pagoda, is a good choice. Based on Pagoda's massive supply chain and store network, fresh food in unmanned retail becomes possible, with daily distribution being key.

Entering unmanned retail, Pagoda chose to collaborate with industry partners for joint development. Through division of labor and refined operations, they maximize both parties' strengths, creating a win-win-win situation for both parties and customers.

By providing highly sticky fresh products to help alliance members improve business performance, the "Big Pagoda Alliance" aims to become an indispensable platform. A representative said, "In the future, besides unmanned shelves, convenience stores, shopping malls, and other high-traffic areas are potential cooperation sites. We expect to cover 6,000 points within the next six months."

Additionally, Pagoda stated it will continue to focus on building its fruit supply chain, while also working with partners to deploy Pagoda self-service vending cabinets. Self-developed points will also introduce partners for joint construction.

**Telunsu Launches New Product for Athletes**

7. For Chinese consumers, the name "Telunsu" has become synonymous with high-end quality, holding a significant share in the dairy sector. Recently, Telunsu launched a new product: Telunsu M-PLUS High Protein Milk.

Unlike other milks for general consumption, this is a product tailored for sports enthusiasts. It is reported that Telunsu M-PLUS contains 6g of high-quality milk protein per 100ml, with a scientific ratio of taurine, vitamins, and minerals, providing comprehensive and balanced nutrition. The packaging features a dream cap design for easy carrying and drinking during exercise, allowing on-the-go energy replenishment.

**China's Top 20 Paper Companies Released; Three Tissue Makers Listed**

8. On September 13, China Paper Media released the "2017 China Top 20 Paper Enterprises" ranking. Three tissue paper companies made the list: Fujian Hengan Group ranked sixth, Vinda International and Gold Hongye Paper ranked tenth and eleventh respectively. C&S Paper did not make the list.

The entry threshold for this year's list exceeded 5 billion yuan for the first time, reaching 5.2 billion yuan, up 1.1 billion yuan from the previous year. China Paper Media believes that companies like C&S Paper may be potential entrants to the top 20.

Hengan Group has been recognized in various corporate rankings this year. In July, it ranked 317th on Fortune China's China 500 list, but its return on equity (ROE) was as high as 23.57%, ranking 21st among the 500.

It is reported that many industrial paper companies are also actively expanding into tissue paper business to seek new growth points. Industry insiders believe that companies with more successful diversification strategies will have better opportunities to enter the top ranks in the future.

Consumers with such questions should be patient. The CFDA is currently using a rolling update method for approvals, "approve as you review, publish as you approve," and more lists will be released soon.

As of now, the pass rate for submitted formula registration applications is 100%. That is, no company that submitted application materials has been explicitly told it cannot pass formula registration.
