Recently, the China Chain Store & Franchise Association released the "2020 China Convenience Store TOP100 List".
The list shows that **Sinopec Yijie ranked first with 27,699 stores, leading the development of China's convenience store industry. Meiyijia surpassed PetroChina Kunlun Hao Ke to take second place with 20,706 stores; PetroChina's Kunlun Hao Ke ranked third with 20,000 stores.**
In the list, the top three companies, Sinopec Yijie, Meiyijia, and Kunlun Hao Ke, all have more than 20,000 stores. Currently, there is a significant gap between them and the companies ranked 4th to 10th.
For example, the fourth-ranked Tianfu Convenience Store has only 5,360 stores; the highly anticipated Suning Convenience Store has only 1,835 stores, ranking ninth;
Among the three major Japanese convenience store chains, FamilyMart ranked fifth with 2,856 stores; Lawson ranked sixth with 2,707 stores; and 7-Eleven ranked eighth with 2,147 stores.
According to the China Chain Store & Franchise Association, **due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the first half of 2020, the growth rate of convenience store outlets slowed overall, and the industry entered a period of phased adjustment.**
**1. Continuous changes in the industry**
Indeed, in the first half of 2020, the industry experienced constant adjustments and changes. After large-scale store closures in the Tianjin market, on May 11, Quanshi Convenience Store released the "Notice of Business Adjustment for Quanshi Convenience Store" through its official account, announcing that stores in the Beijing area would cease operations at 24:00 on May 20, 2020, with some products discounted by 30-40%. As soon as the news broke, long queues formed outside many stores, and some people began "panic buying".
Quanshi Convenience Store was once the convenience store retail brand with the largest number of stores in the Beijing area. Its development has been full of ups and downs. In February last year, it was split and sold to Lawson China, Shanhai Lantu, and other companies. Shortly after the new owners took over, it faced a life-and-death crisis again, causing widespread lament in the industry.
In addition, Japan's Itochu Corporation announced a public acquisition of shares in Japan's FamilyMart at 2,300 yen per share (approximately 150 RMB), and after the acquisition, it would hold 100% of Japan's FamilyMart.
Although FamilyMart in mainland China is not directly operated by Japan's FamilyMart, China's FamilyMart responded to this matter, saying it is unrelated to China's FamilyMart. However, it still sparked heated discussions among industry insiders, with polarized views. For now, whether it is beneficial or detrimental remains to be seen.
**2. Mismatch between demand and development**
According to relevant data, as of this year, there are 130,000 chain convenience stores nationwide. By the end of 2016, South Korea had 34,376 convenience stores, with one store per 1,491 people on average. In Japan, there is one convenience store per 2,226 people on average. Compared with China's huge population base, the number of convenience stores in China is still relatively small, leaving huge room for development.
Relevant data from January 2020 shows that China's GDP exceeded $10,000 per capita for the first time, and residents' consumption levels have reached a certain height. The demand for convenience stores has been continuously increasing. However, judging from the development in recent years, **foreign enterprises such as 7-Eleven, Lawson, and FamilyMart have entered the domestic market for many years, but their store expansion has been slow. The development of domestic convenience stores has also been fraught with problems, and demand and development are seriously mismatched.**
**3. The pandemic slowed development progress**
According to the "2020 China Convenience Store Prosperity Index Report" recently released by the China Chain Store & Franchise Association, the convenience store industry prosperity index in 2020 was 62.97, the lowest in three years. It is clear that **the pandemic has had a significant impact on the overall development of the convenience store industry.**
In addition to external factors, the internal operational loopholes of the domestic convenience store industry are also very prominent.
Domestic convenience store companies still need to improve their supply chain management; in terms of service, negative news occasionally emerges, and many netizens directly compare the service of Japanese convenience stores with that of domestic convenience stores, believing that there is still much room for improvement in domestic development; convenience stores themselves also need continuous improvement in their operations;
Rising rent, utilities, and labor costs are also one of the limiting factors for the development of convenience stores; in addition, digital transformation and online business issues are urgent problems that the convenience store industry needs to solve.
For now, **with the continuous development of the national economy, the supply-demand gap in convenience stores will become more apparent. The demand in the domestic convenience store market is still very large. Convenience store companies need to continuously improve and adjust according to their own situations to have the opportunity to develop in the future and bring vitality to the convenience store industry.**
